? for parents who has or will send kids to college far away from home (packing)

There are stores in NYC. Penn Station has a giant, K-mart. And I'm not certain, but there's probably a Bed, Bath and Beyond up by Columbia. The national chains don't charge insane amounts just because they're in an expensive city. It might just be easier to make a trip to one of those or Macy's for the bedding.

As for flying with SpaceBags, the TSA can open them up to inspect. Not a pretty sight trying to cram it all back into a suitcase. I can tell you that from personal experience. :upsidedow

Do not forget he needs money for books and supplies and these are not cheap. I got my kids a charge card to be used only in the bookstore or if they called me for permission. If you don't want to get him his own sometimes the bookstores work out a deal where you can leave your card on file for him to use. Good Luck Columbia is one of the best schools.

We had a similar trek. I shipped some boxes via UPS from home to the school mail room in August, ordered a TV from Walmart online and picked it up at the store nearby campus, and ordered things from stores and had them delivered to campus mail in August. When we got there we used a mail room dolly and moved the boxes into his room.
