Tony Bennett will appear at a Fox Theatre charity benefit Sept. 27. (KEITH BEDFORD/NYT)
Tony Bennett and Hank Azaria are coming to town for one night, to raise money for homeless people.
The singer and actor will join Mitch Albom at the Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit on Sept. 27 for some talk and -- maybe -- some songs. The event is part of the launch of Albom's new novel, "For One More Day," the story of a man who gets the chance to spend another day with his late mother. The book by the Free Press columnist comes out Sept. 26.
Albom says he thought of Bennett for the event because Bennett, like the character in "For One More Day," lost his father young and was reared mostly by his mother. He hopes Bennett will share a little about his growing up, about his mother and about the father from whom he inherited his legendary voice.
And, Albom says, he plans to have a piano and pianist at the ready, in case Bennett feels inclined to break into song.
"He's 80 years old and he's a great guy and he's got a million stories," says Albom of Bennett, whom he says he met a few years ago, but got to know better recently.
Azaria, who played Albom in the made-for-TV movie of Albom's first breakout book, "Tuesdays With Morrie," volunteered for the fund-raiser "out of the blue" on Monday when his movie schedule changed, Albom says.
What will Azaria do? "He can do anything," Albom says. "He can read, he can do characters, he can do his voices from 'The Simpsons.' "
Albom also says that Joe Dumars, the Pistons' president of basketball operations, has agreed to be a part of the event and will join him onstage.
The evening with Bennett, Azaria, Dumars and Albom will begin at 7:30. Tickets will be $40 for general admission. Ticket buyers can reserve $10 parking, too.
About 2,000 tickets are available. Get them by calling 313-471-3099, visiting Ticketmaster.com or at the Fox Theatre and Joe Louis Arena box offices, says Marcy Hayes of C&B Scene, which is planning the event.
About 100 VIP tickets for $200 each will entitle the holder to an hour-long reception before the show to meet Bennett and Azaria, she says.
All profits will go to two charities:
S.A.Y. (Super All Year) Detroit, the fund to help the homeless begun by Albom during the Super Bowl. The organization raises money for the Detroit Rescue Mission (www.drmm.org or 313-993-4700).
"A Time to Help," the organization for volunteers also begun by Albom. Benefiting from this organization is Volunteer Impact (www.volunteerimpact.org or 248-559-4950), which helps coordinate volunteer opportunities.
"For One More Day" follows Albom's debut novel, "The Five People You Meet in Heaven," published in 2003. The new book's initial printing will be 2.2 million. Both "Five People" and "Tuesdays With Morrie," which chronicled Albom's visits to a beloved college professor dying of ALS, sold multiple millions of copies in hardcover and paperback and stayed high on best-seller lists for a year at a time.
The Detroit event is part of a long promotional tour for Albom, one that will continue until late December. Some of the events in other cities will be charity fund-raisers like the evening with Bennett, he says.
"For One More Day" isn't in the hands of many reviewers yet, and Albom says he got his batch of first copies only Friday. He's had one sent to Bennett.
"His assignment is to have read the book and memorized it" before Sept. 27, Albom says, with a chuckle.
