every time i hear laci's name (or any of the key players in this situation) i still get shivers down my spine.
we live in close proximity to modesto and share the same local news channels, so on christmas eve when this was not a national news story it was the lead story on our stations. i just remember glancing at the news while making dinner and seeing it. i said to my husband "my god honey, that woman was murdered and her husband had to have done it". he was like "how can you say that, they say she's missing-there's no evidence anything bad has happened to her". i reminded him of the weather that day, asked him if he would have considered going out to play golf...then i reminded him of a few years ealier when i was at the same stage of my pregnancy on christmas eve-i said "when i was that far along would you have left me alone to do ALL of the prep. work for a big family get together" he said "i think you would have killed me if i left you alone to go play golf at that point period!".
when scott changed his story to fishing at the berkely marina it became more evident that all was not right-no one around here goes down that way on a holiday unless they HAVE TO-the traffic and fog are nightmarish. and the idea of fishing alone in a small boat in those waters-that's why someone could def. say he WAS there-cuz noone in their right mind does it.
many of our neighbors drove to the peterson house and put flowers and stuffed animals on the lawn-this was a situation that we watched from day one and still see with regularity on our local channels (with regular updates on how scott is doing in jail, what's going on with the life insurance money-he's fighting to have it held until all appeals are exhausted, so maybe 30 years? while it could go as her family wishes to a charity to help families in search of missing loved ones-)
i will probably get the book, but i know it's going to bring up some very deep emotions.
