I keep finding myself wondering why so many of my peers in the south and midwest are voting for Bush.
Sometimes, it really is a "puzzlement."

1. Do they really think that going into Iraq was the right thing to do? Or maybe they think it wasn't the right thing to do but just don't think the US should admit to a mistake?
Some of them genuinely believe that going into Iraq was the right decision, and when the reasons for war didn't pan out, justify that decision with the "bad intelligence" or "everyone else thought he had WMD's" rationalizations. Okay, fine.
However, how anyone can ignore the strategic disaster that is the Iraq, and then blame the MSM for not reporting "all the good things" borders on delusional.

2. Is it fiscal? Are they standing by Bush because they appreciated those $600 checks they got in the mail?
I don't believe it is simply fiscal or that anyone's vote has been bought with $600.
However, if these same individuals who acknowledge the mess in Iraq, the deficits reaching the stratosphere, and the job losses and still continue to support Bush because of tax cuts, well their vote has been bought with $600.
My standard answer to those people is "MY VOTE IS NOT FOR SALE!"
End of story.

3. Or maybe they believe that God speaks through Bush? Or they just share the same religious values as Bush and think that politicians should use their religious beliefs in making decisions for the country?
Some of the religious right may see George Bush as being sent from God to fight the crusade against the non-believer, but I've never met any.
And speaking of the religious right, one of the most satisfying moments in this campaign season was seeing this WH call Pat Robertson a liar. How sweet it is to fantasize how Pat Robertson must've felt when he realized he'd been "Bushwacked". One of life's grander moments.

I just don't get.
The truth is staring us in the face.
What you're seeing today is the result of nearly 20 years of Republican propaganda that "government is the problem". No, bad government is the problem, and we've got that in spades today.
So now we've got people in charge of an institution they have no respect for and we wonder why our government is falling apart. There's no wonder at all.
What is also working here is the results of 10 years of the demonization of Democrats that reached the level of art form under Newt (Hey Bill, I've got my own intern) Gingrich. That demonization was used simply to gain and keep power or to garner big ratings on radio.
The result is we are divided country that is literally at each other's throats. Thanks, Newt, Rush, Sean, and the rest of the opportunistic right. They've done their job well. I hope they're proud of themselves.
