For fellow Canadian DVC'ers - tips for points

Hi everyone. Looking for some advice please. We recently acquired a GF DVC contract; it's our first DVC contract.

We have 140 banked points that expire on March 1 2021.

For those who have rented points on this board, and live in Canada: what's the easiest (hassle free) method to obtain funds from a person who rents from you?

Do you recommend using PayPal? or what other transaction method do you recommend? Any tips associated with using Paypal or other transaction method would be appreciated.

Thank you for your advice.
Having just gone through being charged a fee for doing PayPal the wrong way... Here is my advice as a Canadian accepting payments for DVC rentals:
-DO NOT send a Request for money to the renter through your PayPal account, or you will be charged a $21.95 Goods and Services fee. DO NOT REQUEST A PAYMENT from within your PayPal account. INSTEAD ask the renter to send you the money using your PayPal email through THEIR PayPal account as a “Friends & Family” payment, and specify that renters are responsible for PayPal fees they may be charged. They should use either their PayPal balance or a bank account. (Not a credit card, as that will charge a fee I believe.)
-If you don't want to be charged a foreign exchange fee, ensure your preferred currency is USD in your PayPal account. If you have a USD bank account based out of the US (such as RBC Bank), attach it to your PayPal account, so you can withdraw the money from PayPal in USD without paying FX fees.

Thank you very much! Appreciate it! That was exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks for this. Once someone sends a paypal payment through the way you described above, is all done and good? i.e. is there any way for the person sending the payment to take it back ?

I think it’s all done. I don’t think they can take it back, unless you refund them yourself. Maybe others can weigh in?

I have always used paypal friends and family to have my payments come to me. From my understanding paypal does not condone or refund payments for timeshares. That being said, I have used them for this for years.

If renting doesn’t work out and you wind up having to put the points into RCI, there are a handful of decent resorts out there. We had a banked points from a resale contract that we had to deposit and wound up using them for a week at HGVC’s King’s Land resort on the Big Island. 260 points for a week In the 2 bedroom over spring break. LOVED IT and can’t wait to go back. There are two other HGVC properties on the same area (Waikoloa) on the Big Island - Kohala Suites and Bay Club. We took a look at both while we were there and would happily stay in a pinch.

When putting points into RCI do they have to be used by a certain time? E.g. does it matter that my dvc points expire oct 2021?

I deposited banked Oct 2018 points that would have expired on Sept 30, 2020. They are now good in RCI until Dec 31, 2022 (so gained 2+ years), with the caveat that if I use them to book an RCI stay and cancel, they then have to be used by the end of that year (so if I book a stay for March 2021 and have to cancel, then I would need to use the points by Dec 21, 2021, instead of Dec 31, 2022).

Same boat here,,,,:boat:
I have a dedicated reservation listed but not sure it will rent.
I did book for a traditionally busy time but who knows.
best wishes

Good luck I’ve been thinking of booking July 4 or other popular times and take a chance.

I’ve got 520 points to offload 🤬

Wish there was somewhere to rent to Canadians in Canadian dollars. Not sure many Canadians are heading down this year though.

the rental board does look active. Seems to be short, near term rentals.

If you have not tried, try the rental boards. Very easy, been using for years.

I think they can. If it is sent under "Goods and Services" instead of "Families and Friends", the buyer can file a dispute with Paypal disputing services not received. It is the equivalent of a credit card chargeback. For that reason, some renters prefer to pay the PP fee as an extra insurance for them to use it through Goods and Services.

Also, let's be optimistic... the vaccine is out. Don't you think we will be back to "normal" by the Summer of 2021?

Unfortunately, I don’t think we will be. Children cannot be vaccinated. They say that is a year to eighteen months out. I know kids don’t usually get very sick, but usually is the operative word. I don’t think normal will be a thing until we can also vaccinate children.

I agree with you, I think we can hope for 2022, but coronavirus tend to mutate and we do not know yet if the vaccine will be good for more than a year.
