For C Ann or anyone who might know about the Amish

My son asked me this question yesterday.
If the amish don't allow themselves to be photographed how do they have so many photos in the newspaper about those amish fireplaces you get on those "free" fireplaces? You know the ones, if you pay for the amish fireplace you get the insert free.
Every add has photos of those old Amish men working in the factories making fireplaces.

Well, I grew up among the Amish, and they aren't stupid. They know business.

By the way, my wife has has taken many pictures of them and with them, their horses and so forth. If you get to know them and no how to ask most won't have a problem.

There are different levels of Amish-some more private than others.

Some sects allow pictures, others do not. Sadly those fireplaces are a scam.

Heat Surge, an Ohio based company produces them, w/electric heater unit made in China and the only part Amish built is the mantel.

All the Amish in our area have huge cast iron wood burning stoves to cook, bake, heat water/house and bricks to warm their feet on a cold night.

Hey I know the answer to this one. I leave just north of the Amish in Ohio. And also in the area where they make these fireplaces. The people in those ads are not Amish. I have a friend who was paid to be a "Amish" person for a day in their pictures for the ad. You can see him in the background. Yes these fireplaces are made in Amish country and yes they do employ some Amish people. But it is not an Amish company and the people in the ads are NOT Amish people. Sorry to spoil the magic.

As for photos in general, if they are conservative Old Order Amish (in particular) they will not allow you to take a photo that shows their face.. Some of the more liberal Amish might allow it - and tourists also bribe small children with candy...

The photos you see on post cards and such (full face) have usually been taken with a very long photo lense from a distance..

Many tourism ads are just people "dressed up" to look like they're Amish..

The more conservative Orders simply will not allow it.. It's really goes against the grain of their religious beliefs..

For what it's worth, my dad bought one of those Amish fireplaces. He LOVED his little fireplace with the sterno cans- he had cancer and was cold all the time! The Amish fireplace threw off a lot of heat and was much safer for him. Nice little item, made by Amish or not.

There are "some" that really are made by the Amish.. Those are the good ones!

That's so nice your Dad enjoyed . Our SonIL's bought us one very similar for our sunroom to use on chilly morns when we sit out there w/our coffee watching the birdie feed feast and we've really enjoyed it to the max. Love to feel the warmth and see the flames!
