For anyone who has rented out their points: Would you do this?

I was going to rent my points out this year, but threw in the towel. Instead, I just decided to let some of my family use them. However, I wanted to ask this of the other DVC owners. For some reason my name was not showing up on the Orange County website records. A potential renter wanted to check it out, couldn't find it and then asked me to send a photocopy of my membership card with the numbers blacked out and a copy of my points allocation from the DVC website along with my upcoming trips.

Would ANY of you actually done this? It seemed so extreme to me that it was the "ah-ha" moment that showed me that renting my points out wasn't worth the hassle and I was better off using them somehow myself.

I don't mean this as being an insult to anyone who would do it. I just wonder if there is anyone out there that is as paranoid as me and say NO WAY.

I'd decline that request too. What I'd do instead is tell the member that if they are unsure, they should feel better when they see the reservation confirmation. If that didn't work for them, I'd just move on to the next person.

As for your name not showing up...do you own at VB or HH? Those wouldn't show up in the Orange County register. Just trying to figure why your name isn't there. :confused3

Granny, that actually was part of my terms. I didn't have a problem giving the DVC confirmation letter and I gave my full name, address, and telephone number, but I was amazed that I was still asked for that.

I only own at SSR and AKV. I don't know why it isn't showing up because it was last year. I just can't explain it :confused3

I don't rent. But, to me, that would be more than enough.

There are always going to be customers out there that are a pain to work with. Not that there is necessarily anything wrong with that. But, unless you are renting as a side business, why put up with it? Set your rules. If a customer isn't intersted, move on to the next one.

I am very paranoid about those types of things, and there is no way I would give out that kind of info.

Did you verify that your name does not show up on the website?

How much were you asking? $1000 a point:rotfl:

This is one of my issues, No I would not provide all that info to make someone feel comfortable and I have no problems renting out points.

Many people want a bargain, but they dont want to assume any of the risks.

There are risks on both sides and both parties have to bear it.

Sometimes as owners, we shoot ourselves in the foot by advising people here to request all this information:rolleyes1

I have no problem renting and I wont do 3 way calls (too much info), send copy of my DL, or send a limb or first born either.:goodvibes

Did you look for it yourself on the website or did you just go by what the person said? I'm thinking they may have spelled your name wrong.

No, I wouldn't jump through hoops. If you were renting a summer home on Nantucket to them, would they ask to see a copy of your deed?

I've gone your route -- I'd rather let someone I know enjoy points I can't use rather than the hassle of renting them out.

I am not sure of what terms you were asking for but if someone was asking for a deposit prior to receiving the orginal Disney confirmation then I would definitly want proof that the member was real. I would hope that most rentals are done by contract so the renter would already have your name and address so providing them with some proof without your member number on it does not seem like asking to much assuming that the deposit is made prior to receiving the confirmation. You are asking a person to turn over a large amount of money to a stranger so if you want to rent out the points you need to go the extra yard to make the renter feel comfortable that there is no fraud. Would you turn over a large amount without feeling comfortable about potential fraud especially when so many DVC members with low post counts are renting off points and there was a report on these boards recently about a fraud.

Do you have references? That is the best way to set someone at ease. To answer your question, No, move on. That is going above and beyond.

I don't rent in or out either. Looking up a name in the county records and finding it doesn't prove you are who you say you are, but looking your name up and not finding it at all would certainly raise a red flag. Sort of an Ah-ha moment for the renter.

This is just a real dicey situation for both parties.

I'd recommend that the non-member find another member to rent from OR suggest they make a reservation at 1-407-WDISNEY.

Yes, I gave her my reference and she contacted him.

Liferbabe, it was at 11 per point, but you would have thought I had asked for the first born as a deposit :lmao:

I have rented before I bought in and I was concerned about the risks too, but I never took it that far. If I felt that uneasy about it there would be no way I would have rented in the first place. I just wanted to see if there were any other members like me who wouldn't give out that kind of info.

I was curteous and did suggest this. What really surprised me though was that the response I received back was pretty harsh and she told me that it was a DIS veteran who told her to ask for that information. I really hope it wasn't a DIS DVC Vet. I just can't imagine anyone on these boards suggesting such a thing.

If, she came from the Dis, you have 3700 plus posts, that should have some peace of mind. I would be worried about a scam, if someone asked me for my DVC card. There are some very good printers and programs out there. She may be trying to scam someone else. There is not anyway that I would send that.

There really are people that are not that hard to please and deal with. If she is that concerned, she needs to deal with Disney directly. She will be worried to death until she checks in. Then to ask you to print off your reservation list... really! There is not anyway in this world I would do that. That is for DVC member use only. That sounds to me, like she is going to try to prove to someone that she has access to DVC membership! All kinds of RED flags!!!

I do rent my points out occasionally, but we're now down 130 points with our recent OKW sale so I don't see doing it much in the future.

I provide a written contract which includes my name, address and cell phone number (which is different than the one on file at DVC). The deposit is due two week after the renter receives the confirmation. Last minute rentals have different rules.

Back to the OP's question. No, I don't think I would send that information. I can see how the renter was just trying to make sure that you were on the up-and-up but there has to be a bit of trust involved. The written confirmation should be enough. I *might* have said OK to the membership card (with the numbers blacked out) if they couldn't find me in the register but the point allocation report is way over the top. My guess is that it *was* a DVC vet who suggested the report ... who else knows about that kind of thing? BTW, the DVC website is down now so you couldn't provide that information even if you wanted to!

Did you have any other nibbles on the points? This renter is does have some unusual demands. The vast majority are perfectly happy with the contract and confirmation.

I was just reading over at planning that a newbie wanted to rent points but wanted to make sure the person really owned. Someone referred her to the orange county records where she could put in the last name, first name to see if there is a record of the owner. The OP went on to say that the name didn't come up and what else could she do to protect herself??? This sounds like the part 2 of this post.

Perhaps you can go over there and see if it is the person who wants to rent from you.

Good luck, April

Robin, I did have quite a few nibbles to my ad, but most were for reservations that are impossible to get. Such as a GV for the first week of December at BWV or almost anything during Food and Wine. I was wasting a lot of Member Services' time looking up dates I knew they wouldn't have. That's another reason I just gave the points to family. I have an Aunt with 3 daughters who have never been to Disney so I made her a reservation for AKV next summer.

I'm sure that your aunt and her family will have a lovely time :). I usually *respond* to requests rather than offer my points up. That way I know that the request for the GV for Christmas or the standard view studio at BWV for Food and Wine is not going to fly (at $10 per point!) and I skip it to one that has a better chance of being filled.

Thanks Robin, thats really a much smarter way of going about it and if I ever consider doing it again, I'll go that route.

I really hope my aunt has a good time. I really owed her anyway because she helped me get my job as a teacher this year and I even took her classroom and half of her old stuff so I guess a disney trip is in order ;)

That sounded like something that was recommended here.

I had a situation where I was renting some points from someone and the price increased after we came to an agreement. That was a flag for me and I felt that if I was not 100% comfortable then I should move on, and I politely declined to continue with the transaction.

If it is someone you do not know and you feel uncomfortable, neither of you owe each other anything so just do not proceed.

And $11 pp for a studio is less than $200 a night for any DVC in any Season unless they were renting a weekend night which I highly doubt.
