hi everyone..im doing a paper for my college class..and have to write the life story of a baby...I need to incorporate the age at which the "child" started to crawl and walk...what is the norm for this? Also if the mother smoked while pregnant, would this make this later? thanks...

(its all hypothetical..we all just got different situatinos to write about )

I dont smoke so I dont know if it makes it later for the baby or not. 3 out of 4 boys crawled at 6 months---one at 8 an all 4 walked at 11 months. They were within the norm.

thanks so much for your response!! its the last paper of the year so i wanna make it good..i figured i would ask those with kids:) thanks!

DD1 (now 5 1/2): sitting up at 5 months, crawled just shy of 7 months, walked at 11 months. No smoking during pregnancy

DD2 (now 2 1/2): sitting up at 6 months, crawled at 8 1/2 months, walked (make that ran) at 14 months and hasn't slowed down since. No smoking during pregnancy, but an occasional glass of wine.

Both within the norm, but DD1 towards the ealry end of normal and DD2 towards the later part of the range.

I don't remember what age mine started to crawl, but both walked at 13 months -- aso within the norm. and I don't smoke.

I don't imagine that anyone else can give you a smoker's side so, I will. I smoked during both pregnancies and, my DS started walking right after his 1st BD. DD started walking 2 weeks before her 1st BD. So, I don't think smoking effected that at all. Maybe being male/female did. ;)

DD was crawling at 7 months, walked at 9 1/2 months.

DNephew never crawled, walked at 12 months.

DNiece crawled at 8 months and walked at 10 months.

No Smoking by my Sister or I. :)

I dont smoke. My DD never crawled!!! lol She only rolled!! (she was a big baby!!)
She started walking around 10 months.Good luck on your paper!!

i really appreciate everyone responding....i needed help with this paper....i may be back with more questions!!!

My DS didn't really crawl, he sort of shuffled...he didn't walk until 16 months, however he has a really huge head and I think that's more the reason he couldn't walk and carry that huge melon around.

I've never smoked a cigarette and didn't drink during pregnancy.

Just as another "smoking" guideline.....

My mom smoked with all four of us (this was years ago, as my oldest brother is 42, and my youngest is 30), but I know that one of my brother's walked at 9 months. The rest of us were 12 months (my oldest brother), 11 months (me) and 10 1/2 months (my little brother), so I don't think smoking had any effect on that.

wow..i love these boards! you get answers so quickly..which is great with a ten page paper to write!! i really appreciate everyone helping me out...im only on page 3..so its possible i may have more questions!:hyper:

I used to babysit a boy who's mother smoked during and after pregnancy. It was so sad to see what she did to her baby. He was born prematurely. I don't remember exactly how early as this was about 13 years ago. The baby's development was very delayed. He was also quit small. He had terrible asthma also. He cried continuously too.
The mom worked in the hospital for the neonatologists. She was always told what she was doing to her baby, but claimed she couldn't stop. It was really disgusting.
I know it isn't always so drastic...but you never know.

You might want to add the asthma?

Non smoker. Pete did not walk until he was 13 months old. I think a lot of it had do with the fact that he was such an excellent crawler and could get around a lot faster that way. :teeth:

Im not an expert, but I do think that kids can get asthma at any age.

there are many reasons why kids get asthma. it can be passed down in the family, smokers in the house, the neiborhood the live in, allergies.

I have a friend whose DD had asthma at 18 mos. the father is a smoker (and smoked in the house).

I think the likelihood of SIDS is higher when the mom smokes while pregnant, too.

Of course, my mother smoked and had a cocktail everyday with all of her pregnancies, and she had 9 healthy kids. That was back in the day when they didn't know better.

My oldest crawled at about 7 months, walked at 10 months. The youngest crawled at 6 months, walked at about 13 months. And I did not smoke while pregnant with either of them.
