For all you Tinkerbell fans

Tink, Iridessa, and Fawn are in the books. Rosetta and Silvermist were created specifically for the films. :)

Actually, they all started out as very minor book characters and are named in or shown in illustrations in the 2 main hardcovers (Quest for the Egg and Quest for the Wand - Wand was published after the beginning of current film production) and many of the original paperback Disney Fairies series. The movie was completly scrapped and rewritten when Lasseter stepped in, so they felt they had to bring those minor characters to the forefront. In the last couple books of the paperback DF series, the new girls are more prominently featured and Silvermist even has her own title. (We actually just read that one tonight.) Giving personalities to minor characters from scratch is much simpler. It creates a new start, as opposed to fighting the transition of existing expectations into a new medium.

Personally, I think the original characters and stories were just too difficult to translate in a lot of ways. Prilla and her talent were very hard to explain in 5 seconds and Vidia was just too mean, and explaining that Rani cut her wings off to save Neverland is over the top for pre-schoolers. Also, their costume design is much more complex than the current girls - meaning more expensive to animate the layers, hats, etc. They wouldn't have done well in the Pixie Preview segments and there was the difficulty of maintaining that character consistency that Gail Carson Levine laid down for them.

That being said, the Pixie Previews were sheer genius in getting the buzz about this movie out. Putting them on the 2 Peter Pan DVDs (the only place you can see the Rosetta one besides youtube) was again, smart marketing. We simply can't wait to see it in the theater at the El Capitan in 3 weeks - we have our tickets already! A group of us in the Los Angeles area is going together as a DIS meet. Visit the Southern California forum if you want to join us! We're in the first 10 threads listed - don't have the thread link handy.

I saw this and got all excited I called my dd8 over to show her that we can meet the Fairies at the parks in November and she complains saying that 'they look nothing like how the fairies look and Where is Rani?'!!! Critics!:lmao:

any way She is almost finished with the series and I am not sure she did the very new books so maybe once se reads them she will like the other ones.

My dd was also confused by these 'new' faries as she had read the books about the 'other' ones. She can tell you anything about Rani, and the gang, her favorite being Vidia. I'm sure once she sees the movie she will embrace these faries too, but she already has all the other dolls etc...great, more to buy!;)

They are tink's cohorts from the upcoming direct-to-DVD efforts from Disney...in which Tink has speaking lines.

OMG - Fairy Bratz.

Thanks for the correction. I really need to stop copying information from Wikipedia. :lmao:

Not a problem. I read all the books before I started to read them to my 3 yr old. You can get through the paperbacks in less than 45 minutes to an hour, if you are a fast reader. ;)

After they announced the change in characters, I went back and looked at them again to see if they even had mention of the new girls. I was surprised at the number of times I saw one of their names in passing. As the newer paperbacks were realeased, they had bigger roles, but did not come close to surpassing the book principle characters. Then Silvermist got her own paperback - realeased in August.

Of course our kids have been teased with the new characters on the Disney Channel since February or so. The "Pixie Previews" were quite popular in our house!

My daughter has all the books and loves them! Our trip is planned for January, so she will be anxiously awaiting meeting them.
Like the previous poster's daughter said, though, mine also asked "Where is Rani?!" and "Where is Prilla?" These are two of her favorites, apparently.

We are going to see Disney on Ice in November and will be looking forward to a sneak peek at the fairies then. We'll have to buy the movie before we go!

My sons won't care about the fairies, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will still be there for our Oct 2009 trip. Tink is my favorite character also and I have a tatoo of her on my back.
I love the real life costume. An idea for MNSSHP maybe?

When I first heard about the Fairies movie I thought it was coming to theaters. I am surprised that this was only a direct to DVD. Done well, it could have done well in theaters. I love Tink too.. though we aren't going back until 2010 so I don't know if I will have the chance to meet her. I will get the DVD though.

Anyone know if this is temporary for the Tink movie or is this something they will keep around? With Tink never having a meet and greet....you'd have to think there will be a BIG demand and some big lines to meet her...

There will be four Tinker Bell movies released over the next four years, so I'll bet the Fairies will be in the parks for at least that long. If not longer. :)
