i have never taken my family to us and i have only been there once for one day about 8 years ago. dh and i are thinking of purchasing ap.
for all you avid us goers, tell me ehy i should or should not purchase these passes. what are all the pros/cons, other perks associated with the pass?
any advice is appreciated.

There can be great discounts at the hotels and if you are going more than once a year, you will probably save money there.

I live in Kansas with my DH and my two DD (7 & 7mo). Last year I bought an AP because the discount that we received on the hotel made up the price difference of the AP. We stayed for 4 nights and the saver rate was $182 and we paid $139 a night.

I also like it because it gave us the 10% discount on merchandise and at some of the resturants, that we didn't already have a coupon for.

Also, this year I renewed it for $149 so that is less than another 7 day ticket now.

The best reason....it gives me an excuse to get my DH to go back. We are going in June for WWOHP plus we will prob also go back around Feb 2011.

The park discounts for food and merchandise are 10% with the Preferred AP and will pay for itself in no time. Also...you will be able to purchase discounted tickets for family and friends who happen to be there with you. And let's not forget...if you don't stay onsite the free parking benefit will save you $14.00 each day you go. Last but not least...if there are any hard ticket events (Rock The Universe, Halloween Horror Nights) you want to attend, the AP discounts are really great! You won't go wrong with an AP. :teeth:

What kind of discounted tickets can I purchase for family and friends with an AP? Also, is the 10% food discount apply to the entire bill or just the AP holder's meal?

You can purchase the one day one park tickets for 10% off and the one day two park tickets for 15% at the gate. Sometimes Universal will run a 50% off special during different times of the year for friends/family. You can not purchase ahead of time. As far as the food goes, I don't know if it can be taken off the whole bill or not. I usually pay my bill so I'm not sure what happens when it's more than one person.

I made my first ever trip to Universal a couple of days last week. I went with three friends here on the DIS. As I entered I decided to go ahead and upgrade my 7 day two park ticket to an AP (since I'll probably be going back in Oct, Dec, and next May). We ate lunch at the Nascar restaurant on City Walk. When I asked about getting the discount for our table, I was told that we could get it as long as I paid for all four meals. If we did separate tickets, only the AP holder would get it.

Make sense. :thumbsup2

Most returants will only do it for parties of 6. Last year we had a party of 12 at Margarittavile and the server was nice enough to split the check and then apply the AP discount to both checks for us. I don't know if other places would do that or not :) but it was really nice of them.
