? for all those potential DVC buyers out there

:thumbsup2 In a word = buy!!! I sure as heck wish I would have bought when I was 40 instead of 50! And now I'm 60 and consider DVC my best purchase ever. OK, Mom, your girls are at a great age to do the Disney thing, and as much as you hate to hear this - you'll be a "Granny" one day. I can tell you, there's nothing like taking your grandchild and your "adult" daughters and Son-In Law on DW trips. (Hopefull, he"ll be a "cool" Son In Law!)

I am struggling with the same question the OP has, thanks for starting this thread. The post from Buckeye was very helpful!

Our only regret was not being able to buy DVC sooner. Since we became members we have experienced job loss, taking our 2 kids with us, then taking their fiance/husband, to DH & I going alone, and to our kids and their spouces going on their own. Hopefully we'll take grandchildren some day. Whew! Our needs have changed from 2 brs to studios. Our time of year is constant as I am a teacher, but that will/can change for you. That is what is so super about DVC. We stay at WDW, we take cruises, and Adventures by Disney with our points. We've also stayed in NYC to see a show - all with our DVC. For us it was one of the best decisions we've ever made. Good luck with your decision.

Hey - A great BIG THANK YOU for all of your insight and support! I have been sick w/the flu for the past few days and these boards are the only thing cheering me up rightnow  . I will keep you posted with our decision. I don't think hubby is on board quite yet, but hopefully I will get him there in the next few months.

The way I figure it is our next trip will probably be May 2010, so with the 11-month window we need to purchase @ June of 2009... keep you fingers crossed for me :goodvibes

Have a good weekend!

Only a couple months away from graduation.
Maybe it would be better to wait till you find the job first in this economy.
Since you join as new member, you will get a full set of points after everything is closed, you can arrange a good vacation with your kids during summer time.

Another consideration is to start small with resale then add more points later on.

We are throwing around the idea. I am sorta holding out that maybe the resale prices will drop just a bit more. We don't need a TON of points, so that is good for us!! But we do go every year and will continue to do so for quite some time!

If your only concern about buying is the economy then I would go for it. There are so many things that can happen either way. We could be booming again in a year, no one really knows. I wish I had bought earlier as well. Not that I am old now, 30!!, but my kids are 8 and 6 and I would have almost broken even by now if I had bought when I first looked at DVC 6 years ago. We were going almost every year so it just made sense. Good luck on your choice!!

Not to be cold to people who have lost their Jobs, but this reminds me of a quote from Harry Truman. "It's a recession when your neighbor loses his job; it's a depression when you lose yours."

If you feel like you are secure in your jobs and you can afford it, go for it. Why should you deprive yourself because your neighbor is out of work. You not spending is not helping them, and as someone else said, spending helps the economy.

We are strongly considering joining DVC, the only thing holding us back is that we do not want to finance the purchase and we don't want to drain our savings to do it. I'm currently working side jobs to save and will probably have the money to join in a year or less, so we'll just hold tight until then.

Help! I would love to hear from anyone who is considering buying into DVC right now...

I can not stop thinking about buying into DVC, but is anyone else out there who is mulling this over (i.e. obsessing about it!) nervous about the commitment in lieu of the ecomony? My husband has a great, stable job... we are pretty sure. I am in nursing school and will graduate next year, so I'm certain I'll have a good future career. We are in our early 40's and our girls are 8 & 11. I know now is the "time to buy". But I recently read a post a few days ago that said (something to this effect) -> how can you buy into DVC when people are losing their jobs? I can't stop thinking about that comment.

Anyhow, just looking for your feedback and I guess a little sympathy to my plight! Thanks...
While it is sad that people are losing their jobs and their homes, you can't let that rule your world. You could get hit by a bus tomorrow, but that isn't going to stop you from leaving the house. I think it is the ridiculous entitlement thinking that causes someone to think that because they can't have something then you shouldn't either. A lot of these people are the same that over mortgaged their homes and lived paycheck to paycheck as if the housing bubble would go on forever. Please do not let the lack of financial common sense of others change your life or the enjoyment of DVC with your family.

That being said, I think it is very foolish for someone to finance a DVC membership at 10.95%. I hope that we have learned from taking too much debt in this country. I realize that not everyone can pay cash for a DVC membership, but I hope that they will at least save for a year or two until they can put a sizeable amount down to limit the amount financed.

I just bought 160 pts at BCV and can't wait to start taking my 1yr old. If I lose my job then at least I will have an inexpensive vacation to enjoy with my family every year.

We will be buying in the next year, for sure (I think :lmao: ) The truth is, we started out looking at DVC and now we're looking at other TS possibilities which, unlike DVC, are at great prices. We don't expect DVC resales to get cheaper, based on the info that has been posted about ROFR on DVC resale contracts.

And since we're buying from Canada, we won't do it until the exchange rate gets better -- it would be like paying 20 % more than a year ago. If you wonder why there's less Canadians visiting the US this year, that's why.

Long term, I think the plan will be 1 TS off-site for 1 week (probably starting 2010), 1 week at AKV starting 2011.

If you are in a truly good place financially, then you are helping us all by buying something you feel like you will get great use out of !

We bought back in our 30s, when we were DINKS, and are so glad we did! We've had 12 years of great trips, brought about 25 different folks with us over the years, and have just really enjoyed it. And our DS has grown up with Disney in his life.

Don't feel guilty!

I'm totally sympathetic to your plight. We added on twice in this economy (In Sept for BLT and 2.5 weeks ago for VGC. ) DH and I have been very lucky to have very stable jobs, but still there are no guarantees. I had some sleepless nights--especially a couple nights before actually signing the paperwork. I almost backed out of the BLT. I finally decided that if folks like DH and I who are reasonably secure don't buy (something we have been waiting for-for years), what chance does this economy have to recover? :confused3 Vital to the economy's recovery is: Faith, Hope and a little Pixie Dust. ;)

(And if I am wrong, at least we will have a place to stay for part of the year at our DVC time share... )

That was me who got called out on the other thread about being unkind when people are losing their jobs. Made me sad as it is a grave assumption to think that as I Christian woman I am not caring for others simply because I am prepaying for vacations that I already take. :sad1: This actually helps the economy because Disney needs that money up front to continue employing people. It is very much like the stock market. There is nothing unkind about vacationing with your family. It is a blessing. The thread is on DVC Planning, it is "Need DVC buying Advice". We are contemplating whether or not to buy. I just back off when I get ready to make an offer

Just read the other thread. Did you ever get jumped on -- but the poster only had 3 posts. :confused3

Since I have my Master of Development Economics, I can say unequivocally that if you have extra money that you can spend on vacations in the US, then you are doing the best thing by continuing to take your vacations. Has anyone looked at housing prices in Orlando lately -- you can get a 3 bdrm home under $19,000! Orlando's economy was in trouble before the banking crisis -- if people don't keep traveling there, not only will more people lose their homes but others will see their homes devalued.

Look at it this way, if those with money had continued spending, your government wouldn't have to put together a stimulus plan ie. to do some spending where consumers have left the market.

The only other thing I would say is before you buy a souvenir, check the back to see where it's made (but keep buying stuff from Canada, too, cause we like to spend our money in the US :lmao: )
