Anybody in the Indianapolis area that can help a girl out?

We are leaving from the Chicago area next Friday night and I just found out that part of I-65 in Indiana is closed! I just ordered a AAA TripTik and we have a TomTom, but I am curious as to how much of a wrench this is going to throw into our trip!

Friends in the midwest suggest that rule number one is avoiding metro areas at rush hour (the rule is universal!); however, Indiana folks will better provide info on the I-65 situation if they have it.

Calling Indiana...!

All the best. :thumbsup2

I've found that rush hours in most Midwest cities is about equal to midday traffic around NY, DC, LA, Boston. The highways seem to be able to handle it better for some reason.

Just seeing this thread. We will be making the drive from the Houston, TX area to WDW the first week in March. It is funny how our driving game plan keeps changing every week. I am sure it will change much more before we actually take off.

I use term "Chicago area" very loosely :goodvibes Last time we drove, we timed it well and missed rush hour in the cities, so I am hoping this upcoming trip goes just as smoothly. I imagine if I don't get an answer here, my AAA TripTik will be very helpful :)

You'll need to take 465 around Indy, which shouldn't add much time to your trip unless you hit Indy at rush hour.

Our trip last September (has it really been a year already???) was our first time driving down, and our driving game plan actually changed as we were pulling out of our driveway at 3:30 am. For months I hemmed and hawed over whether to take I-65 through Indiana and Kentucky, or I-57 all the way down through Illinois, with both routes eventually leading to Nashville. I had finally settled on I-57, but my GPS wanted to take me the I-65 route. So I thought I'd be really clever, and I used my Microsoft Streets and Trips to plot out my route, and then I exported that route from my computer to my GPS. Well, apparently my GPS had other ideas. When I tried using that route, it kept recalculating, even as I was just heading out of my driveway and making my way through my subdivision. It couldn't find its location on the map, and kept wanting to take me where there were no roads. So we made the decision to just punch in the address of our overnight hotel south of Atlanta and let the GPS do what it wanted, which of course routed us down I-65 instead of I-57. But we rolled with the punches, and it turned out to be a great drive down. I'd definitely take that route again, but next time we go (sadly not for another two years), based on a recommendation from someone on this 2000-mile thread (and I can't remember who that was), we're planning on heading to South Carolina and hooking up with I-95 there to take us to Orlando. It'll add maybe an hour to our drive, but also new destinations and different things to see. For us, the drive is part of the vacation, and not just a means to get somewhere.

You can fool the GPS by inserting a via destination (add an extra stop) using an intersection along the route you want to take. For example,we want to take I57 down and our GPS wants us to take I65. We program our first night destination and then add to the route the intersection of I57 & I74 which is past the point of the GPS telling us to do a U-turn.

Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013; local gas (regular) prices range from $3.39 to $3.55, with most around $3.47.

All the best. :thumbsup2

Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013; local gas (regular) prices range from $3.39 to $3.57, with most around $3.43, a slight drop.

Three of the stations I passed this morning were down to 3.29 and that was for cash or credit card. Hopefully this will spread a little further north to the other exit 67 area!

So ill be driving down from the Chicago area in January. Has anyone everndome winter road trips?? Any tips on the route I should take down??

On the road now...we left at 10:45 and have had a good ride so far...now that we are in Florida, it keeps raining hard and there have been a few accidents. GPS is saying we will be there by 2:30!!

At one point gas was 3.29 just filled up right after the Florida welcome center on 95 and it was 3.39

Don't cha love seeing the palm trees along the highway.... Being from Ohio, like first seeing the red dirt of the Carolina's and then the palm trees of Florida... Knowing we're almost there....stay safe!

Yeah, we did that for the drive home. But we didn't want to stop the drive so I could mess with it, and my wife isn't GPS savvy enough to do it while I was driving. But it actually was a blessing in disguise, since we were able to experience both routes. The drive home was beautiful, with all the autumn leaves in Illinois.

We drive to Disney and FL about 3-4 times a year (or more) and always take I57 to I24 to I75 to FL Turnpike. We do a stop along the way usually just past Macon, GA on the trip down and Manchester, TN on the way back. During winter, we book our WDW resort stay for a day later than when we would normally arrive. We book a fully cancellable hotel in the Disney area for our usual arrival day. We set a phone alarm to alert us an hour before the cancellation without penalty time for that hotel. We are usually able to determine if weather or anything else will delay us. Since Disney rooms need to be cancelled so far in advance, we won't have to pay twice for one night (Disney and an extra hotel on the drive down) if weather delays us. If we aren't delayed, we can get to Orlando, do our normal arrival night routine and transfer to a WDW resort the next morning. If we are delayed and have to take an extra day driving down, we just cancel the Orlando hotel and book another hotel along the route.

We realized we had to add a via point after one drive home when we were I24 and our GPS told us to take I65 from Nashville. We ignored it and every exit after the I65 exit we passed it kept telling us "recalculating" and to take the next exit and go back. After about 5-6 of those recalculatings, it finally told us "You can't get there from here" and shut down. We were still on I24 at that time. I guess it got mad at us for not following directions! I guess the lesson is: Don't cross your GPS! ;) :lmao:

Yes, that happens every time we get onto 417 from I-4. Just shut it off :rotfl:
