Driving down right now :cool1:
Gas is expensive : 4.09/gal & 4.05/gal in upstate NY but it still beats our prices in Qc (1.38/L which translates to 5.22/gal when we left) and we haven't seen anything lower than 4.00/gal sor far (on the I78, getting close to the NY/PA border right now).

Great drive so far...

Has anyone driven from WDW to Williamsburg, VA? If so how long is the drive. We always drive from PA to Fl and back, but would like to spend a night or 2 near Williamsburg on the drive home. Plus we alwas take 81 home, we'd have to take 95 to get to Williamsburg.

coming from tannersville, i would jump on rt33 to i78. here are my times. i live in nazareth so i leave around 2:30am, take rt191 to rt22 to rt78. to be safe, i would add 20 min. or so to the first numbers:
home to i81 ------- 1hr/1min
i81 to MA -----------1hr/19min
MA to WV ----------10min
WV TO VA -----------22min
VA ti i77 -------------3hr/23min
i77 to NC ------------26 min.
NC to Char nc-------- 1hr/44min
Char to SC ----------11 min
SC to i26 ------------1hr/13min
i26 to i95 ------------ 49min
i95 to GA ------------- 1HR/7MIN.
GA TO FL ------------1hr/44min
FL TO I4 ------------1HR/42MIN
I4 TO EXIT68 ---------54MIN

these times are with rest breaks etc.... so it may vary a bit pending on traffic and how often you stop. the trip i did this was a smooth sailing trip. i pretty well hit this every time.

Impressive!
We live in Bucks CO., PA and are driving in April. Debating whether to take this route or 95? We plan to depart on a Friday around 5:00 or 6:00 pm. Taking the above route says it will add a little over 100 miles and 1 hr 20 minutes. Also, concerned about the wildlife since we are driving at night. Our thoughts with 95 is that we should miss most of the mess? Just may have to flip a coin?

We are getting ready to set out Friday on our very first family road trip. We are breaking up the trip into shorter segments. 4 hours, 9 hours and then Sunday 3 hours. I am pretty nervous for some unknown reason. Maybe the kids LOL. I drove by myself at 21 from Northwest Indiana back home to Northern California so road trips are not the issue. Maybe it is the fact that there is just so much unknown. Anyways seeing on here people who have made the trek before us has really helped!

We should be hitting Atlanta around 4 on Saturday I think. I am hoping traffic wont be too horrible or at least not worse than Chicago traffic :)

Hey happycampers we are from northern Indiana also we are about hr north of Indy
We drove down in Xmas 2011 was smooth sailing we went 65 to Montgomery Alabama then cut over I think we made Tallahassee in 12 hrs on first day then the rest the next. We are driving down again in may and can't wait! 60 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are from st. louis. 16 hours or 1,008 miles. Have done the drive at least 15 times if not more. We always leave at 5:oopm and drive all night. Arriving in Disney at 11:00am after a few stops for gas and food.

My kids have made the trip when we had 1 child at 9 months, and 18 months, then with 2 kids at 9 months + 6 years, 2 years + 8 years, 4yeras + 10 years and now this year we are taking a freind. 5,11,and 11 years.

driving all night is so much easier for us. the kids sleep 10 hours out of the 16. thats 10 hours of no fighting, no "are we there yets".

and i hate the thought of paying $65 for a hotel room for just a few hours. much less 2 night.

I want my vacation to start. we leave next thursday @ 5:00pm will be in the worlld by 11:00am friday. by your plan, you would not arrive untill saturday moring. we would have already had a 2 day vacation head start.

Yeah we are looking forward to going slow it is part of our vacation. I am not one of those fly by everything to get to the destination type of vacationers. I like to take in what is on the way. I have done the all night thing and it works if you must limit your vacation time but for us the drive is part of the vacation. 6 days is plenty of park time for my family. If there is any sights on the way that catches our eye we will have time to stop.

We typically fly so we get there in 2 hours and so have done the quick start and on the run.

Have a great vacation.

Getting ready to drive down to my fishing paradise in central fla this Saturday. My partner is once again brouching the topic of taking the 81 route. We leave NJ 8pm Sat night and drive straight. Is there any major gotchas going on that I should cave in and take the extra 90 miles going this way?

You hit the on the head on the major concern in one sentence!! Ds8 seems to feel the need to stop at every single rest area. I think I have seen every rest area between here and Detroit during road trips to visit family there. Ds4 doesn't ask to go as much but when he's gotta go he's gotta go.

Safe travels to all who are heading out soon!!

I'm also curious about the drive from that area. We will be coming from Pittsburgh, but going to Newport News to get my brother and nephew. Mapquest says 12 hours.

Also, just for anyone that takes 95 down, what's the drive like? Is 95 crowded the whole way (it is from DC to Richmond)? Will traveling on Saturdays (end of August). I know the trip home could be bad because it's Labor Day weekend and people will be on the road.

I was wondering the same thing. We are coming from Maine and taking the same route. Leaving on a Thursday night, trying to get through past Maryland by morning. Staying overnight in GA, getting into Orlando on Saturday. Is there a better route? Or is this the one to take when driving through the night? Thanks!

When travelling south on 495 in Mass, if it's not rush hour, take the exit for i290 West towards Worcester to the Mass Pike instead of taking 495 all the way to the Pike. This will save you 25+ minutes.

If we leave home (south jersey right outside of Philly) around 3:30 PM and start our drive are we going to hit a lot of DC traffic? Should we leave a bit later (can't leave earlier). Thanks!

Leaving South Jersey at 3:30 will put you into DC rush hour traffic unless you go through Delaware and take 301. Leave a half hour to hour later and you should miss DC (and Philly/Wilmington). Might get caught in Baltimore but its not that bad.

Driving from NW chi..we leave on Thursday after dinner/work..get to Champaign, Ill - spend night, pick up DS#2 and friends after their classes, then on to WDW..
we are looking to be in WDW by 3pm Saturday ..maybe early, depends on traffic and potty stops.

Making the drive now. Stopped somewhere in Tennessee because grandma wanted ice cream. It has been a beautiful drive so far. 62 degrees and sunny. Drove from NW Indiana to Elizabeth KY last night and with all the potty breaks (son is like clockwork with reading signs and needing to stop. We rolled into then motel and dinner around 8pm. It has been nice :) people have been so friendly. Roads are so so smooth once you get out of Chicago/NW Indiana :)
