We normally drive straight thru but this year we are stopping at south of the border. I am worried that we might hit bad weather, we normally fly when we go in December but since we are going the week of xmas and new years flight prices were insane.

Are there hotels there? Are they decent? And correct me if I'm wrong, is this the place that there are a zillion signs for as you drive South into Georgia, and is it literally near the FL border in Georgia? We're looking for a place right off of I 95 to stay at near the Fl border. I want to drive across the border in the morning, and stop for our morning OJ at the Florida Welcome Centre :)

This is at the nc/sc border. And yes it is the place with a million signs. I cant find anyone who has spent the night yet.

South of the Border is at the NC/SC border and looks like the set of a horror movie. It looks abandoned and creepy in the daytime and nighttime and honestly, I can't imagine staying in a hotel there. If you want to stay near that area, Florence SC is a really nice place to stop with a TON of hotels.

We stayed in Pooler/Savannah Georgia area on our trip in August and it was great. We stayed in a Country Inn and Suites, nice breakfast, really close to 95 and a Wal-Mart right down the street for a nice grocery stop for your check-in day. We were about 20 minutes or so from the Florida Welcome Center.

Thanks for that info. We plan to stay closer to the Florida Border, but in Georgia. I'll check out Country Inn and Suites. They have a great one in Cape Canaveral, so it would be nice to try out one of their other hotels :) We've driven by South of the Border but have never stopped. Might be worth a stop just to take pics and be able to say "Yup, Been there! LOL" I didn't remember exactly where it was, for some reason I thought it was in Georgia :rolleyes1

We're staying in Richburg SC from Pa this about a 10 hour drive and about 8 hours from WDW, I was told by a DISer that this is a good area with lots of hotels. We're staying at an Econolodge with excellent reviews, and breakfast for $40.00! We leave in 13 days woohoo

We decided to stop for gas at South of the Border during our return drive last month (we did it once before several years ago). Then we got brave: we decided to patronize its diner. Well, we're not that brave; instead, we ordered two grill cheese sandwiches to go! [By the way, there were only two other people in the diner.]

And we intend to take a break from our ten-straight drive throughs next month; in fact, Pooler, GA is our goal. [We last stayed at Pooler in October, 2007.]

All the best. :thumbsup2

We LOVE South of the Border... it's our stop every year (never slept there though..) We get ice cream, take pictures with the larger than life statues, browse thru the gift shop.. It's a MUST do on our way down! :lmao:

"Driving in opposite directions on I-95"

On our return drive from WDW on I-95, we made a stop at the VA rest area. While there I phoned a friend who was driving with his family to WDW. I told him where we were and he informed me that he was also on I-95, and only about 20 miles from the VA border. A plan was immediately hatched! We got back into our vehicle and phoned him again. We kept in constant contact for about five minutes and then described to each other our respective locations. Between mile marker 10 and the Emporia exit (#11) we saw each other approach in opposite directions; we flicked our high beams on and off a few times as we passed each other and waved. :wave2: Cool!

All the best. :thumbsup2

BC, that's pretty funny. What are the odds? Esp. that you would pass where there wasn't some obstructed view!

Indeed, when we had our first phone conversation a thick area of trees prevented us from seeing I-95 south, but after several miles the area in between opened up. It was a unique experience...and it was funny.

All the best. :thumbsup2

My son's football team won their conference game, so we'll be headed back down the 1st week of December. :cool1: They're playing in the AYF championships in Kissimmee. AYF is just like Pop Warner. We have to be at the Rosen Shingle Creek by 1pm on Sat Dec 1st, so I figure we'll leave our house at 4am friday and make it to Savannah. I'm thinking of Pooler since there is a Fatz Cafe there and then have an easy 4 hour ride giving us plenty of time for his team checkin.

To all 2,000+ Mile Round-Trip Drivers: HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Question: Who is next on the road to WDW?

All the best! :thumbsup2

I dont leave until dec 22nd. But my daughter is inflight from baton rouge to come home for Thanksgiving. I haven't seen her since August so this is almost as good as leaving for Disney

Well, we're planning to drive down again on December 26th! I see we've still got the record for longest one-way drive at 2020 miles! We're going to do it in 2 days of 16 hours driving each day. Should be fun! :thumbsup2
