We are driving from Chicago to Orlando for the first time. It will be me, dh, dd-7, ds-3 and dd friend-10, FIL & MIL

I just started looking at hotels in chattanooga, TN. It seems something is going on the Friday night we are supposed to be there as most of the hotels in our price range are booked! So now I am looking for hotels in Dalton, GA.

If you have time to spend, there is a fantastic aquarium in Chattanooga. My family also enjoys Rock City & Lookout Mtn :)

Howdy!

Ah, sunny and warm San Antonio! Wonderful! It was the 176th anniversary of the Battle of the Alamo. The book signing went well, thank you.

Now then...let our 26th drive to WDW countdown begin.

All the best. :thumbsup2

Sounds awesome. I'm sure you had a very interested crowd there! Congratulations.

tam is still looking at the lexus rx350.:scared: she killing me. but, she works for it and works hard so why not.

Sure thing! These are all probably available via Amazon or Audible, but I'd also check your local library (Ours is part of a South Jersey consortium where we can download directly to our MP3 player if we want). :) I've chosen these because while they were targeted at my children, both my dh and I enjoyed them very much as well:

  • The Hoboken Chicken Emergency
  • Misty of Chincoteague
  • Paddle to the Sea
  • The Story of Dr. Doolittle

Misty is a bit longer than what I would suggest for a first time, but my kids really enjoyed it, so I threw it in there. It did take them a couple chapters to get into it, but I have a rule that we put 100% attention to whatever entertainment we're doing in the car, so they knew they were stuck for awhile without any other games or such. ;) They ended up asking to listen to it again on the trip home...FWIW.

Thanks so much! I will definitely check my library! Sounds like a great way to keep everyone occupied :)

Hmm. If we want to have breakfast at WDW in two weeks, we'd better start gettin' ready.

All the best.:thumbsup2

crystal palace breakfast or main street bakery. popcorn::
the ap on my i phone says im 921 miles from the main street bakery. :rotfl2:

I'm thinking the usual: Grand Mimosas and a large Mickey Waffle -- after a 1,000+mile one-way drive.

All the best. :thumbsup2

Reading all of these flying horror stories makes me feel that much better about attempting the drive this year. Some of the stories sound bloody miserable.

Here's a question for those who have made this drive before. How many of you stop and see some sights along the way, and how many just drive until you get there? I'm debating whether or not I want to plan a few stops on the way down (the "world's biggest ball of twine" type) or just limit stops to the gas/bathroom/leg stretching variety. I'm leaning heavily towards limiting the stops because it's only the wife and I, and we want to get past Atlanta on the first day, which is around 870 or so miles. That would leave us with a little over 400 miles to Orlando.

After reading this thread we did our first haul behind quick stops trip ever in December (2200 + miles) I liked it:woohoo: We tend to be the scenic type :hippie: Time is always a factor, how much do you have? Happy planning popcorn::

Having made the trip from SE Michigan many times, I generally head straight to Georgia and then go straight through to Orlando on the next day. I suppose extended stops would be doable if I had more of a European-type holiday schedule (and a bigger wallet -- hehe). Cities along the way include Cincinnati, Lexington, Knoxville, and of course Atlanta where there is definitely plenty of good stuff to see.

I don't know, it seems like the relaxed "Route 66" type road trip is a thing of the past. Now that schedules are tighter and fuel cost is astronomical, just getting there is challenging enough as it is. Too bad really. Star Tours is great, but the World's Biggest Thermometer and the World's Biggest Catsup Bottle also have a certain charm. ;)

We are drive straight thru only stop for gas and bathroom types. We start our drive around 1:30/2am and get pretty far down the coast before the kids are even really awake..then we stop, eat,gas up and get another good 400 miles in before we stop. As the drive goes on we will stop for a little long with the 2nd or 3rd gas stop and let the kids run wild for a few..lol
