Well we are making our 2nd drive down to Disney in 5 days!!

The second 2,000+ mile round-trip drive in five days? Details, please!

If accomplished you will break the current record for the Shortest Time Between Drives (19 days). See page 52, comment #778 for the latest records!

All the best. :thumbsup2

First time poster make his first time long drive to Florida this weekend. It is a very short-noticed trip.

1. We plan on leaving Friday evening from Long Island (Q1: When it the best time to leave Long Island on a Friday PM).
2. We plan on making a quick stopover for some rest in Greenville, NC. (Q2: I was thinking of avoiding Baltimore/Washington DC altogether and heading down the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel on US-13 to Greenville, NC has anyone done this).
3. From Greenville, NC we will head to Orlando, FL. Probably leave late Saturday or really, really early Sunday.
4. Wednesday before Thanksgiving we will head to Fort Lauderdale area.
5. Saturday after Thanksgiving head back up to Long Island with a stop in Greenville, NC again.

I know I will be exhausted after this trip and will never want to drive again, but you have to do it once right?

Rule #1: Avoid all metro areas at rush hour, especially on Friday.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel costs a lot of time because of its local approach road, Route 13. Then when you get to the other side there are no direct interstates that take you efficiently to I-95.

All the best. :thumbsup2

We'll be there that week, too (12/4-110! Can we join the meeting or is it just Dads??

hey sharadoc, got your pm, pm me what your doing on what days, ill make sure we meet along the way, one way or another.:thumbsup2 lets see if we are in the same park on the same day. if we are, we can pick a day, ill pm you my cell and we can meet up for a hello and a picture!!:thumbsup2

Well, you're glossing over the best part--the jumble of highways that is Virginia Beach/Norfolk! If you can get through that, :) US 58 is really a good road to hook back to I-95, at least in the evening.

"Jumble" indeed! We were there in September and what an experience it was to get to Norfolk from I-95 via an overnighter in Colonial Williamsburg. Summer time is particularly brutal in that area.

All the best. :thumbsup2

Over the years many reasons have been posted by 2,000+ mile round-trip drivers as to why they drive instead of fly. It seems that there's a new reason: Have you seen the posts about the airport body scans and the so-called "pat downs?"

All the best. :thumbsup2

Yes, and it is really a shame. I saw that little 3 yr. old. To tell you the truth I wouldn't even risk it but I would have just taken that little one out of there and drove home. Every day it seems to be worse. I drive because I really don't like flying (but have flown to Alaska, Europe a number of times , FL 2 times and Mexico) I really think this is over the top. We drive a week and a few hours from now!!

The Drudge Report is full of articles of those that were 'enhanced patted down' as well as the photos of the scanners that dont' save pictures.

just another good reason why i drive among others that i wont go into bc.:thumbsup2 see ya on the road!!!:thumbsup2

Didn't you used to have to pay extra for a pat down or full body scan? Or are we talking about two different things?

Anyone who has recently driven down along 95, how much was gas along the trip and in Orlando, if you recall?

Just trying to get a ballpark figure for our trip in a week and a half. We're taking the Mariner which gets a few mpg less than the Fusion we took last time, so I'm a little more conscious of the price.

We're also doing a dry run for packing the car this weekend since there will be four of us going (one of whom is my brother who has more wardrobe changes than a pop star). I hope I don't have to tell him he has to cut back on luggage.

Go to GasBuddy.com and type in a few cities along 95 and you can find a recent price for gas. When we went in August and October, Florence, SC had the cheapest price of anywhere (and historically always is). Brunswick, GA was the 2nd cheapest. Virginia is the next cheapest. North Carolina prices are usually similar to New York State, so we usually gas up in Virginia before the NC border and then we can make it to Florence, SC. On the way back home we went through Charlotte, so our gas prices going that route won't help you much.

Also, if you have a Sam's Club account you can get gas at many along the way there and at Wal-Mart; sometimes they give you a discount if you use your Sam's Club card. Pilot and Flying J have merged recently, but if you have one of their loyalty cards, you can get and extra 1 cent (or 5 cent) discount.

Have a great trip! :cool2:

Gas prices are changing so much that what we paid Oct. 31, 2.61/gal., is now a fairytale. On the way back, Nov. 13, we paid 2.89. We had two or three fillups each way and the price just kept going up. Drove a Subaru Legacy.

Yes, we leave on Fri morning and gas has been going up here in NJ almost every few days for the past 2-3 wks. Figures. I guess it will be not as bad since we are taking 1 car instead of 2 so a savings there.

the price of gas and oil on the market dropped on friday. gas was trading about 2 cents less per gallon. hopefully this is the highest we will see.:thumbsup2

Leaving Ohio either Dec 3rd or 4th and still debating which to do. Either 3rd between 4-6pm and drive until the 4th afternoon or just wait and start at 6am the 4th and stop when we get tired that night and head the rest of the way in.

Is there a thread or a post with a list of "Dis" good value hotels on I95 for the drive down and back? I am sure someone has created a post already and I can't seem to find anything using search. Using TripAdvisor is so sporadic and time consuming. I trust what folks on this site say much more. TIA
