We've driven from close to Toronto 5 times now. Everytime we've driven straight thru(23 to 26 hours) but this time we plan on breaking the drive up into three days (first time driving with a newborn). Any suggestions on accomodations? We're driving the 1-75. We are hoping to take a some tourist stops for a couple hours like the aquarium in Atlanta and maybe something in Cincinnatti.
I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around not making the best time and trying to relax and make the ride part of our vacation instead of just getting there.

I can help with Cincinnati. What exactly are you looking to do?

We have our own aquarium in Newport, just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. And we have a pretty good zoo. And we have our share of museums and parks.

LMK. :)

We left this morning around 3 (I couldn't sleep). We made it to Gainesville, FL around 8pm. I think we made pretty good time. We could have made it all the way if we really wanted to. Traffic was not too bad. We ended up going through Atlanta around 1:45ish and it was not too too crazy. Lots of cops were out in Georgia though. We got gas twice so far. Once in TN for $2.53 and once in Georgia for $2.69. We will need to fill up when we leave in the morning. It looks like we will pay about $2.79 for it here in Gainesville. I give more deetails once we get home. So far, its been good!

We love zoo's. Also children's museums and science centers are a great stop. We homeschool so we are always looking for educational and unique places.

We just made it to Lake Buena Vista today, driving from Western New YOrk. Lowest gas prices we found were as follows: Florence, SC $2.47 @ Pilot :thumbsup2 Brunswick, GA Jeckyl Island exit (southern most exit for Brunswick $2.55 @ Love's (formerly Pilot). Virginia, about 20 miles north of NC border was around $2.57. Great prices considering we are paying $2.88 per gallon at home. Hess station next to Boardwalk is $2.63, but Wal-Mart is cheaper... at $2.58 I think.

Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, about 75 miles south of Cincinnati. The World Equestian Games, the premiere horse show in the world, will be at the park from Sept 25 through Oct 10. Might be a little crowded then. But the park itself is worth seeing during normal days.

Go to the library and check out this book: Along Interstate-75

It has everything you are asking for and more!

Hitting I-75 from Michigan in 6 days!

its a sat. morning in the summer, your hitting shore traffic. you will probley crawl to richmond.:thumbsup2

We were on that route last Thursday night. If I remember correctly, it's construction and as someone else pointed out, Richmond traffic. Not only do we have to plan around Baltimore and DC for "rush hour" or "shore" traffic, you also need to plan around Richmond. Once you pass Richmond, it's an easy 70+ miles an hour open road.

Anyone have advice on dealing with Richmond's rush hour? (go straight through; go around; avoid altogether?)

We are leaving Northern Virginia at 2-3pm on the Friday before Thanksgiving (wish we could leave sooner but it's not an option right now) which puts us in Richmond right at the beginning of rush hour.

What can we expect?

If you're used to driving in Northern VA, Richmond "rush hour" is nothing. I've driven through at all different times and seasons with no problems.

I take 295 around Richmond, but not because traffic is bad -- I've never had a problem with Richmond when I've driven through it. But there is a BBQ place I just love that's off 295, Prince George's BBQ.
