We are leaving a week from Thursday, and I was just curious how construction is on the drive. We will be going down from Indy. Thanks for any help.

Hi guys!! We are almost positive we will drive for our trip in October / November. Flights are too high for the 5 of us. So, unless a great deal comes out, it is the open road for us! Here is my question or I guess questions:

1. We are in the Poconos (about 1100 miles each way)...DH and I want to just drive straight through...possible? He works nights and will sleep the afternoon of the day we leave. We plan to leave about 3 in the afternoon when the kids get out of school. If I am figuring correctly, it would put us in WDW around 10 or 11 the next morning with a couple of stops. I would probably start the drive, he could drive after a dinner stop so I could sleep, then I could take over around maybe 3 am or so. He could then nap and I could do the rest (or switch if we need for the end). Anyway....basically, has anyone done the drive straight through and is that time frame realistic? Also, I know a lot of people say to leave about 3 am, but I think 3 pm will work better for us in the end. I am thinking the worst of our traffic will be in the Philly area??

2. It is our first time not flying...how to handle the kids? They will be 15 (DS), 12 (DD) and 7 (DS) at the time. They tend to pick at each other a lot (our one fear of driving). But, at the same time, they play well together. I know that sounds strange for the 15 year old especially...but when they are involved in an activity, they get along. Our thought was that when we left the school campus, they would be in vacation mode and in an excited good mood. They will have their ipods, dvds, games. So, we are hoping to hold them off about 4 or 5 hours for dinner. I know it's late, but hate to stop only 2 or 3 hours into the trip. I will bring them some snacks, so they will be ok. Then, I figured they can change into pjs and have their blankets / pillows and settle into their seats with a movie. They will have all been up early that day with school, so they should easily fall asleep. I am hoping they can sleep through until about 7 the next morning. Any ideas what to do for them then? I would like some thoughts on activities or games or anything to keep them happy!!

3. If we do decide to go with our plan as it is now, does anyone have any suggestions for that first day / few hours? We were thinking maybe a waterpark (since it can be a bit more relaxing) and then MNNSHP that night with a nap in the afternoon somewhere? I am just unsure that we will survive the party after that drive? But, with the initial adrenaline rush and a power nap, maybe? We would have from around 10 am until 4 or 5 (if we want to go into the party early).

Thanks to everyone that can offer an opinion!

I will be driving from Austin, TX to Disney with an infant (1 yrs), 10 year and 13 yrs old....OH MY I am asking myself if I am really going to be able to do it? If you guys can give me some suggestions that would be great...I leave next Thrusday around 1:00 pm and planning on driving until about 11:00 pm or so...

Video Games, DVD's, special snacks a bunch of different stuff and bring a lunch box for each kid. We put stuff in it every time we stop. Stuff like apples raisins and other healthy stuff but also junk they don't get at home, tootsie rolls lolly pops. Lots of cold water. Rest breaks. Bring a playground ball and make the older ones run.

Rotate the baby's toys. Put new things in a bag for all the kids and bring them out as needed. Assuming you're staying at a hotel on the way down try to find one with a pool that's open when you stop for the night. Pack one bag for all of you to bring to the hotel so you're not bringing everything in or tearing apart the bags in the car looking for stuff. One pillow and a blanket each (even for the 13 yo). Even in 95 degree weather (air conditioning in the car).

My 2 will be 8 and 11 when we leave next week. We stop for nights 2 on the way down and try to get an indoor pool the first night (probably Virginia) and mostly likely Jacksonville the 2nd. We just bought 2 of those "jump the peg" games from Cracker Barrel and a mini-checker set. New cartridges for the Didj for our son. Our daughter is getting a DSi for her birthday tomorrow so that will be novel. We bring new DVDs to play in the car.

We have Scrabble Flash, Boggle (the one that's self contained). MP3 players.

Hope this helps. Have fun
Oh and our special ritual is a stop a Dairy Queen at some point. :goodvibes

Hi guys!! We are almost positive we will drive for our trip in October / November. Flights are too high for the 5 of us. So, unless a great deal comes out, it is the open road for us! Here is my question or I guess questions:
It is possible to drive straight through, we've been doing it every year or two for the past 10 years from Bucks County, PA. I realize that you want to leave at about 3:00 pm, but you'll most likely hit a lot of afternoon & evening rush hour traffic on the Northeast Extension (I-476) around the Quakertown interchange to the Mid-County Tolls, then along the non toll portion of I-476 to I-95, and again along I-95 until you pass Washington DC. This happened to me one time and it extended our driving time by 2 hours. We've tried several departure times and routes, and have found one that works out great for us. Here's our method:

Since I also work shift work and am used to being awake for 13 hours during an overnight shift, we leave around midnight. I wake up early that day, or stay awake if I just worked overnight, and load & prep the truck. I then go back to sleep around 3:00 pm and sleep until 11:00-11:30 pm. My wife & our kids (now 15 & 16) stay awake all day. After I wake up & shower we leave. We reach the Mid-County Tolls about 30 minutes into our trip. Once we get onto I-95 in Delaware my wife & kids go to sleep while I drive. At about 7:30 am we stop for breakfast & gas in the Carolinas, which allows us to miss any morning rush hour traffic in that area (although I don't think there's that much). Other than that stop we only stop for once more for gas, and any bathroom breaks that are needed. If I need a power nap (usually due to the food coma after breakfast) my wife takes over between two rest stops which gives me about 30-45 minutes to sleep. We arrive at WDW around 3:30-4:00 pm. The only traffic we occasionally encounter during our drive is along I-4 between Orlando & WDW. My wife & kids really like this driving method because the trip is halfway over when they wake up at breakfast time, so it only seems like a 7-8 hour trip to them instead of the true 15-16 hours it really takes.

As far as what to do to keep the kids occupied, we bought a DVD player with two separate screens that hang on the rear of the front seat headrests. The kids also bring their iPods, books, and our son brings his Sony Playstation Portable. My wife plays some driving games (usually the alphabet game or they try to find as many license plates from different states as possible) with them to keep them occupied.

If you leave at 3:00 pm I think a waterpark is a good option since you can all rest on a beach chair if needed. If you consider my method you can walk around Downtown Disney or just relax at your resort.

DVCZerfs will be along tomorrow to give you some pointers. I think you can take the "back way" and avoid all that turnpike, 95 stuff. He's in the Lehigh Valley. We're closer to Reading and we'll be leaving around 4 am and taking 95 on a Saturday morning, which is heavy beach traffic time, but we should be past it all before it gets too busy.

Good luck!

More flight notes: When we boarded, someone was sitting in one of our seats by mistake. It happened to be an off-duty flight attendant who was flying to another city; her seat was actually one row back. She never carefully looked at her ticket! :confused3
We were hoping that the pilot was going to be a bit more attentive.

After finally taking off, we cruised across the sky and started the decent into Newark. About 20 minutes to go, we encountered turbulence. An attendant announced that "turbulence will probably continue until we land. If you need to throw up, a bag is located in the back compartment of the seat in front of you." :scared1:

We never heard such an announcement in many years of flying. Fortunately, the turbulence eased and we landed without incident. And it appeared that the air traffic controllers were awake!:rolleyes1

However, because the flight's arrival time had changed no one was at the mobile jetway to allow everyone to deplane! There was no followup by the airport as to the new landing time. The pilot had to make a phone call to get someone! It took about 10-12 additional minutes for the cabin doors to open. :upsidedow

Now then...we can hardly wait to drive to WDW next month!

So, for all those who wish to fly to WDW, "have a nice day!" :headache:

All the best. :thumbsup2

This post made me laugh and scared me at the same time. How could no one at the airport know a plane was coming in?

We are leaving a week from Thursday, and I was just curious how construction is on the drive. We will be going down from Indy. Thanks for any help.

We drove down from NW Indiana last week and construction was not an issue at all. I think we went through 2 construction zones and they were short and not backed up at all. I think one was in TN and the other in Atlanta. We drove through the night, left NW Indiana at 8pm CST and arrived in Orlando at 4pm EST (19 hours total with leisurely stops on the way). We are 2 hours from Indy so you have a 2 hour jump on us.

:goodvibesonly about 54 days till our (my) marathon drive from Syr. NY to WDW. First time driving we will be hitting the road about 4am Sat morning (thats the plan which means 4:30 - 5am with my crew :confused3)

We are planning a stop for the night in south of Savannah Ga. then only a 3:45 min or so drive (according to my trip tik) to the world on Sun:banana:

Thanks!! We figured the 3 in the afternoon would sort-of save us a day. My gps and mapquest are both sending me on route 80 to 81 (going towards Hazleton and through Harrisburg). I had pulled them up and looked at miles, just not the whole route. So, maybe because of how far North we are, that's the way we go? I just assummed Philly....maybe it's longer for us that way? I am thinking that this way will be MUCH less congested also. It actually came out to less than 18 hours which was my original figure! :thumbsup2

Oh good!! Thanks a bunch! Everything is now pointing me to Harrisburg instead of Philly! Is that the back way? I figure if we stick to leaving about 3 after grabbing the kids, the worst traffic will be over in the very beginning of the trip. That is a Thursday, so possibly some work traffic Friday morning, too. But, we will be so close at that time, it hopefully will be fine! Hope you have a great and safe trip!

The Poconos are gorgeous and wish we could live there.

Awww....thanks! When you do live here, you see it from a different perspective. We have actually seen a lot more crime lately and it takes away from the beauty. Sorry to be Debbie Downer...I think it's that way wherever you go...things are great to visit! LOL

We're from Doylestown and drive every year or two, and are doing it agin in a couple of months. Tolls round trip for you should be about $23.50 if you're taking a passenger vehicle & not towing anything. Here's the breakdown:

PA - NE Extension, $3.25 each way between Allentown & Mid-County
DE - I-95 Newark Tolls, $4.00 each way
MD - I-95 Ft McHenry Tunnel, $2.00 each way
MD - I-95 JFK Memorial Highway Tolls, $5.00 northbound only (nothing southbound)

There are no other tolls along I-95 all the way to I-4 in Florida, and no tolls on I-4.

Better keep an eye on the tolls. I understand that they have or will be going up. I'd add at least $1.00 to each of the above numbers just to be safe.

What trip planner are you using?? I did a google from Savannah to All-stars resort and it said 296miles.

This post made me laugh and scared me at the same time. How could no one at the airport know a plane was coming in?

Your observations about about our post (#2333) were obviously shared by us, especially after we arrived safely home.

Here's another tale from many years before we started to drive in 2002: On a flight from Newark to Orlando, the turbulence got so bad that the service crew was ordered to sit by the pilot, who had the sound of fear in his voice. :scared1:

Getting ready for drive #23 next month!

All the best. :thumbsup2

hi lovemy3kids!!!! im from nazareth and spend alot of time for work in tannersville and the bergs.:thumbsup2 poconos is a big area,if you want to pm me you can but this is what i would do. leaving at 3pm, you have a few choices which either one is good. you can take i80 west to i81 south or you can take rt33 south to i78 west to i81south. dont mess around getting going, you want to be on the other end of harrisburg before rush hour. you should hit the maryland line in about 21/2-3 hours. the easiest, driving straight through at night is to take 81south ti i77 south to i26 to i95 to i4. it will take you about 161/2 to 17 1/2 hours max as long as you dont stop alot. i81 and i77 are wide open interstates, you dont have to look for what lanes or fight city traffic. the interchanges are well marked to hit i26 and i95. looking at a map it looks like you are making a big swing but trust me, the last thing you want to do is hit the dc beltway, at night, maybe in the rain, not knowing were your going and taking a wrong exit. you will hit nothing but traffic through philly,dc and balt. i also go another way to avoid philly,dc,balt but not knowing the area and the turns, its a little ruff to do at night and its not much shorter. if you need more info., just let me know.:thumbsup2

I need a place to keep track of my route for next month. Feel free to comment!

6/10
1pm- Wash van and fill the tank
2pm- Leave Plano, TX
5pm- Rest stop at Waskom TX Travel Center (TX/LA border)
7pm- Dinner stop in Alexandria, LA
10pm- Stop for the night in Baton Rouge, LA

6/11
7am- Leave Baton Rouge, LA (breakfast in hotel)
11am-Lunch stop in Pensacola, FL
4pm- Rest stop in Tallahassee, FL (+1 time change)
8pm-Pull into Windsor Hills condo

You have the right idea. Drive through the night. The. 3 kids will sleep 8-10 hours of your 19 hour trip. So in theory, you only have to occupy them for 8-10 hours. This is easy with 3 or 4 good movies.

Thanks so much!!! I will note all this down! I live in Scotrun...so if you are in Tannersville, you are in my backyard! LOL We are sooo close to 80 and 81. It just never dawned on me to go that way...just instantly thought SOUTH!!! LOL

I may need to lean on you for some more suggestions as we get closer! For now, do you think going down 95 at night is ok? Some have said that it is scary with the trucks!! :scared1: Also, later on, if I post my directions I have from the gps and pc, could you tweek them for me?

Thanks!! We are trying to work things so they don't have to miss the extra day of school or we lose a Disney day. We would just be sitting home waiting to leave that first night anyway...may as well be heading for the destination!! Our kids are allowed 5 school days for vacation that the school will excuse. Anything more than that will be unexcused. So, they will be having 2 unexcused days as it is. If we left 3 am the morning before, it would be a 3rd unexcused day and if we waited til 3 am the next morning, we lose a Disney day because of getting there so late and lack of sleep. I figure this affords us an afternoon nap before some activity!!

Hello! Long-time lurker here. We will be leaving in 38 days from South Jersey. This trip includes myself, DH and our 4 children. The plan is to leave on June 25th at 4am, we stop for breakfast once we have passed Baltimore, D.C. area and then after that only for gas and restroom breaks until we hit Brunswick, GA. We will be stopping for the night there and continuing the trip the following morning arriving at Windsor Hills around 4pm. Any and all suggestions are welcome; from reading your posts, you all are the professionals so I think I've come to the right place:)

going down 81-77-26, once you hit 95 in s.carolina, you will be fine. i would stay away from 95 through philly,dc and balt. because of the time you are leaving, your gonna hit rush hour and your gonna sit in traffic. there are trucks all over.:thumbsup2 on i81 in the mountains just remember two things with semis, going up the mountain, stay to your left. the semi is going to crawl up the mountain. you start going down the other side,STAY TO THE RIGHT,the trucks you just passed are going to come smoking down the other side in the left lane. just stay out of there way and you will be fine. id rather drive with a truck driver than a bunch of people yackin on a cell phone and texting while there driving on the beltway around dc.:thumbsup2 there wont be traffic in the middle night but trucks what ever interstate you go on. people are so affraid of trucks and if you respect the fact, that, that thing cant stop on a dime and get out of your way, theres no problem. dont drive or hang out next to a semi. when you go to pass a truck, look in his mirrors,if you can see him, he can see you. i see people go to pass a semi and decide they dont want to go the extra 3 miles over the speed limit and they just hang next to him, your asking for trouble. either pass him quickly, or stay behind him. he puts his turn signal on to come out in the left lane and your coming up on him in the left lane, blink your lights at him two times quickly if hes clear of you so he knows he can move out in front of you. same way when he passes you and he wants to move back over in front of you, when hes clear of you, blink your head lights so he knows he clear of you and its safe for him to move back in. if you watch his trailer lights, most times, they will blink them back at you. thats a thank you from him.:thumbsup2 if your sluggin away in the left lane and you see a semi flying up behind you, just put your turn signal on and move to your right. people think they are going to play traffic cop and slow him down, its not worth your life, hes alot bigger than you. let him go by and jump in behind him and draft off of him.:lmao:
