FOP...are the restraints really necessary?

I can totally see it in my head now that you've said that. Is there a different ride at Disney that has the test seat somewhere less obvious? I swear I remember hearing that about an attraction once.
EE has one that is over by the entrance to the single rider line, so it's sort of tucked back beside the store.
Other than the car for TT, I'm not sure of another test seat at Disney, though they may well have them

Splash Mountain didn't "need" restraints, but Disney added them because people were standing up. I could see the same argument for all future rides that don't "need" restraints but need them because people will break the rules and do things they shouldn't do.

If they weren't needed they wouldn't be there

This. Engineers added them for a reason.

The need for restraints isn't only because of the ride, it is also because of guest behavior. The "last sophisticated consumer" which is just a nice way to say average idiot member of the public has to be accounted for.

I'm a "bigger" girl and I didn't have any problems. I think you will be fine. There is a seat outside that you can test.

I would say they are necessary. It is so hard to take your eyes of of the ride, but if you take a moment to look around at what is going on, it is crazy!

Someone earlier compared it to Soarin..-- yes, but if you take a moment to around, there are like 4 or 5 different floors of rooms all watching the same ride you are- it is impressive how many people are actually riding it at the same time as you- I had no idea there were that many levels-- and the "banshees" are right on the edge. It would be a deadly fall from the top level for sure.

Also, if you take a second to look back at what is going on in the room you are in- it's unbelievable how much is going on! The wall you were looking at when you boarded is now behind you and moving up and down every time you are tilting forward and back! It's disorienting!

I was miffed because the CM kind of pushed me in tight to the seat so my leg was a little uncomfortable, but I would take that over my chances if I were to accidentally get loose.

They did that because some people kept theirs loose and climbed out. If you (not you directly, but collective "you") didn't try to get out, you wouldn't have any problems falling out, even with looser fitting restraints. But they have to keep it so you can't physically climb out on purpose.

I am 6'4 and weigh about 235 and though my shins were nearly too long to fit, I did fit. Snug ride but I made it just fine. I think part of the restriction is based on guests refusing to relax and fit the machine. I watched people back out simply because they did not like the restricted feel, not so much that it was impossible to fit them.
