Just returned from the ortho. dr. and found out that our 13 year old DS has to have surgery on his foot again. We put this vacation off last year, due to similar issues. We are booked and still planning to go. Surgery will be 3 months prior to vacation, however healing and fatigue take a toll.

Although he should be out of all casts/braces, etc. will renting a wheelchair be a problem? Is there an Orlando company that rents wheelchairs (similar to the stroller companies), so that we would have it too and from parking, hotels, etc.? He is concerned that if he is in a wheelchair, he will not be allowed to ride certain rides, even though he should be fine to do so, just fatigued from all the walking. Anyone have any reassurances.

First trip as an entire family of 5 to WDW, planning on 7 days in the parks with one day "off" in the middle.

Hi and :welcome: to both DisBoards and disABILITIES!

If you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. One of the top items is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information. Post #2 deals with mobility and stamina problems. It lists several off-side locations whiuch rent wheelchairs. A few advantages of the off-site locations are that you can get one best suited in size your your son, and they also tend to be much more adjustable that the park rentals.

Or, if you want an easier route to the FAQs, click on the link in my signature.

The only restrictions that a person may have is where there is the possibility of causing injuries to someone else. Anytrhing else is advisary in nature. Note that unlike DL, almost all lines at WDW are mainstreamed, so a person in a wheelchair (and their party) will go through the regular queue to either ride boarding or special seating for shows.

And another thing you might consider is actually renting at home and bring the chair with you on the airplane. As medical equipment it is not considered for any baggage limitations and can be used all the way to the door of the aircraft.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. DISboards is great, but quite overwhelming with all of the info. Good info. about the lines being different at WDW than DL. Thanks again!

My 17 yr.old DD has CP, but is mobile and struggles with extreme muscle fatigue. We always rent a wheelchair for her when we go. There has never been an issue with her riding anything. Sometimes we park the chair outside and sometimes she rides the chair through the line. They almost always ask if she is able to transfer from the chair. If your son can do this, I don't think he'll have any trouble riding anything. My DD rides everything! Have a great trip!
Also, if you are staying at a Disney resort, they often have wheelchairs you can borrow for free. You need to leave a credit card imprint and you are responsible for the chair if it disappears.
