Aloha! Are flip-flops ok for wading into the rocky beaches (and coral) or is some other type of shoe/sock better? Maybe Teva sandals, for more stability and less slipping?
I haven't been to Aulani but at the beach if I know we are going somewhere rocky I prefer my teva sandals. I find that my flip-flops will slip of if I decide to walk on the water edge but my Tevas are solidly on and I can walk a while with out my feet hurting.
Water shoes/socks are great for beaches where coral or lava rocks might cut the feet. They are sold locally, even for young children. My wife uses her diving boots. Water shoes/socks will stink if left wet in the trunk of a car for more than a day or two. Btw...beware of thorns. I've been on several beaches in Hawaii where kiawe or some type of invasive mesquite tree thrives. A half dozen thorns pierced my crocs and went through the sole. My son had a mild reaction to the thorn.
Most important is the potential for infection from a coral cut or scrape.
Water shoes are inexpensive and should be worn. That's not to say don't go near the water, but just be aware of what can happen.
