I'm looking at my mobile order options for later this week and a message pops up stating the a meal must be purchased with alcoholic beverages. Does anyone know if this rule is still being enforced?

Yes, it is. While sitting at Carthay, I overheard the waiter telling the table next to us that they would have to order food if they wanted another drink. He brought out their initial drink order and then asked what they’d like to eat. When they said they’d only be ordering drinks, he told them he was not allowed to take a drink order without food.

But yet, they have locations like Pyms Tasting Lab that only sells drinks. Okay, I just looked and they also sell $7 Snack Molecules but I haven't been hearing of people being forced to buy those when they get a drink. I'm not arguing with you, and I know that is CA policy that you can't order just drinks. Maybe the difference is if it's in a "bar" or a "restaurant." Who knows, I've given up guessing.

The rule applies the same to both bars and restaurants. Enforcement is a different story. I purchased just a drink for my husband from Pym’s. But clearly a different restaurant in the park enforces the rule while another one does not. It might be the difference between being at a sit-down restaurant and a bar where you just order drinks. And had the people at the table next to us not tried to order a second drink, they probably could have just paid their bill and left without ordering food. It was the second drink without ordering food that the waiter refused.

You have to have purchased food from Pyms tasting kitchen (possibly other locations) within a certain amount of time previously and show your receipt.

This is not accurate. I purchased just an (alcoholic) drink through mobile order. I didn’t even receive a pop-up warning when I purchased the drink and no one said anything to me when I picked it up.

I think people should prepare to have to purchase food with a drink, but enforcement of the policy is inconsistent at best.

What about places like the Karl Strauss cart? At ToD, we were able to buy a beer there regardless of whether or not we had food with it.

I think this might just be a Carthay rule at this point. Like they don’t want people making reservations to just drink. We ate their tonight and when we were seated we were asked not to remove our masks until we ordered and received drinks or food. They did not ask that of us at Lamplight earlier in the day. So I imagine the different restaurants may have some slightly differing policies.

Definitely no food requirement at Pym’s. I got a drink only 2 days in a row and was never asked to show anything from the kitchen side. One day I did have a kitchen mobile order around the same time so in theory it would have “known” about it but the second day I did not.

That said, I also don’t see the pop-up message at Pym’s Tasting Lab that the OP is referring to (it does pop up at Sonoma Terrace, Hollywood Lounge and Rita’s, for example. And it DOES show up on alcoholic drinks from the kitchen side). Not sure why the “rules” are different for Pym’s Tasting Lab. Maybe because that location itself doesn’t actually sell “adult meals” (which is what the pop up says is required)?

Interesting. At TOD, we were at Lamplight, and they specifically told us not to remove our masks till we had something to eat or drink in front of us. Water counts.

We were actually the first table seated (11:30 reservation) so maybe it was just not necessary to tell us this at that time? We had drinks in front of us before anyone else was seated near us (we were inside behind the bar looking out over the water... it was so nice!).

I was going to ask this as well. I think they have like bags of chips or pretzels, but I don't really want to buy food for just a beer. Hopefully not enforced.

It's not enforced. In the app, it's literally a glitch that you can ignore and just keep ordering. Trust me. We have bought several alcoholic drinks without food going back to May 9.
