So, I think I am going to start making my DDs baby food...she hasn't started on solids yet but will be soon. I do not have a food processor but am looking at getting one. What size should I get? The lower the cost the better, but I don't want something that will break asap. Thoughts?

I have a food processor, but did not use it for making baby food. I used my magic bullet, so much easier to get out and clean and put together. Granted I had to some things in 2 batches, but I was only trying to fill an ice cube tray or two, not a five gallon bucket.

I second the Magic Bullet.

OR, what I have is a Braun handblender. It came with a sort of cup with blade that you attach the top (the motor) of the handblender to, and it becomes a mini food processor. I used that for making baby food, and still use it now (kids are 4 and 6) to puree fruits and veggies to "hide" in their food. The bonus of this is that you get two appliances in one! I use the handblender all the time for soups, sauces, and for beating eggs. :thumbsup2

I make my DD's food as well. I already had a Magic Bullet, but if you plan on making a larger quantity of food, it takes awhile because you have to do separate batches.

I bought this food processor: http://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Beac...FCWC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287095517&sr=8-1 I wasn't expecting much considering the low price, but I've been pleasantly surprised with it.

If you just make a very small amount at one time, then a Magic Bullet or one of those 1 cup mini food processors (about $10) will work okay. But, I typically make a larger amount and then store the extra in my deep freezer. For example, last month I baked a 7 lb butternut squash. Even with my 6 cup food processor, I still had to run 3 separate cycles to puree it all. If I had been doing it in my Magic Bullet, it would have taken forever.

Magic bullet here, too.

Even in the sizes I used for the magic bullet, I still had TONS left by the time my DS moved onto table food. Of course he wasn't a big fan of baby food at all.

There's also just a plain old food mill if you want really economic. Plus you gain arm muscles, lol.

The good thing about those, rather than a food processor, is that you can use them easily to make baby sized portions of whatever it is you're eating, too.

Recently I steamed carrots and pureed them with my stick/immersion blender for a recipe and it did an amazing job. I actually thought to myself at the time that it would be great for baby food.

Second choice would be the bullet or bullet-type blender. It's great for small portions, but you can only use the cups that come with the set.

Personally, I'd go with the stick blender. It's so versitile. Many come with a few different attachments like a blending blade, a whisk and mine even has a mini food processing jar that is good for making salad dressings and chopping nuts. It's great for pureeing creamed soups right in the pot. We use it so often I don't know how we got along without it before. Oh, also have to mention that cleanup is totally easy!

I made both of my sons' baby food and had a food processor. I didn't like using it, though. I loved using the Kidco Baby food maker and mill. It only cost about $10 and I could take it anywhere with me. If we were at Grandma's, I could just use some food that they had there and mash it up.

I agree with many of the other posters...I used a stick/immersion blender for all my babyfood. I own a food processor, mini food processor, blender, and immersion blender. I used the immersion blender for all the baby food.

a great website is http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/
