food items in check-in luggage on SWA ?

I'm really leaning toward shipping water via Amazon Pantry or taking reusable Brita bottles, packing most food, and just buying milk and cream cheese at the resort. The only things is fruit...we eat a lot of it at home and it would be nice to have some for our room. Has anyone traveled with fruit? Or just buy at the resort. $1.49 per banana is steep though!
If you're picky about water, Brita will not cut it in FL. I grew up down there and have never been able to stomach it.

I've packed bananas in a big tupperwear before. Your MB Box might work for a couple of them.

I have brought with me, and returned with, fruit--apples and oranges mostly. Bananas are way too delicate, unless you package them carefully in a box.

After reading everyone's responses, I am thinking you should take it in something to help it not get squashed. If it makes it, great! If it doesn't ALL make it, you tried. What's the worst that could happen to it if you try to protect it and put it in ziplocs so it doesn't 'juice' if it does get squashed

You're not crazy at all to pack food. I think lots of DVCers do! These are great ideas! Thank you to everyone who has shared!

No, it's not crazy at all!
1. Sometimes I have food left over in my house before I depart. So instead of it perhaps spoiling while I'm away, I take it along.
2. Even though I've been to Orlando 11 times, and know the "best" places to buy things, NOT having to bother shopping when I arrive enhances my vacation.
(3. Having to have certified kosher food that is not readily available in Orlando means I must bring some of my own food.)

I'm so happy I'm not the only one that does this. I spend so much time planning what to bring and what to have garden grocer deliver! But, my feeling is, if it makes my vacation super easy as far as meals so I can enjoy my vacation with my DH, DS3, and DS6mths, then it's totally worth it. I'm preparing some meals and freezing them ahead of time so I will only have to thaw them out and warm them up. I was also thinking that I will bring some frozen water bottles in my checked bag with the cold items instead of ice packs so My bags will be lighter going home. I always freeze water in the room and bring it into the park for ice packs so I won't have any need for the freezer packs.
Thanks everyone for sharing all your great tips!!!!

I'm happy to hear it, too. I always have some "friends" telling me I'm crazy for doing it!

Peanut butter itself is not a problem. The issue is that it appears dense on an xray and if you pack it, there is a good chance your luggage will be searched.
My luggage is usually inspected, but only on my return trip from MCO to JFK. I should also mention that I usually bring a peanut butter sandwich on board with me, with no problem.

Well, I placed this on the DVC boards because they typically have a kitchen and I figured traveled with more then could be fixed in a studio or regular hotel room. But apparently the DVC board didn't agree and moved my thread
Moved from DVC Boards.

I am glad it was moved. I am not DVC and would never have looked there. :)

I was planning on bringing nonperishables in a checked bag, but now I am also thinking of throwing in some cream cheese and yogurt. The underbelly of planes typically is colder, but I still wasn't sure fridge items would keep. It sounds like it would work, especially if I throw in some ice packs. I was thinking of bringing a lunch box sized cooler anyway, so I think I will try packing it inside a ziploc. I think I will also try bananas and possibly grapes packed in "tupperware" from the dollar store. I can just toss those in recycling before we come back home.

I did post it in both places but I am glad this one being moved did help you.
I know all the responses have certainly help me :disrocks:

I love all of these ideas! Another bonus is that we'll have free space in our luggage for souvenirs on the way home.

I have a lot of cases of water here at the house and am thinking of splitting up a case amongst us all and putting in our checked bags. Think it will be ok or should I wrap them up in bags/baggies? Don't want a suitcase full of wet clothes when I get there. :sad2:

I would put them in bags. My last trip, I returned with a small bottle of dish detergent, and apparently the NSA going through my luggage squished it, and it was all over the inside of the luggage.

We tried using Amazon Pantry on our last trip. It took a long time to get our boxes... apparently, boxes that are shipped go to central storage and stay there until you actually check in. The hotel will not hold the boxes. So, you won't get the box until the afternoon of the day after you check in. This was kind of an issues for us. My friend had the same experience with a case of water she ordered from Costco.
