My DS who is 10 has severe allergies to dairy and egg. We have taken him to WDW more times than I can count. The main reason (other than I LOVE it there, it's my "happy place") is that we can feed him so well there! We are actually planning a
disney cruise for March (and another is booked for March 2009 already) after our wonderful experiences at WDW.
ANY restaurant will bend over backwards for you (although some countries in Epcot we avoid as we don't think there is as much for him at them, and we know what types of foods he likes). They have ingredient listings and will make substitutions at the counter service places. The sit down restaurants will send a chef out to talk to you, and go over what they can make. It is amazing! We had dinner last visit at Chefs de France (okay, it was probably a $400 dinner for the 4 of us, but worth it!) He had smoked salmon for an appetizer, a wonderful steak, I forget what else. At Restaurantasaurus (maybe misspelled) they substituted a hot dog sans bun for the chicken nuggets for the kids meal for him. The manager even had the person fixing his tray change their gloves to avoid any possible contamination. He's never had any reactions there at all (although I wouldn't go without our benedryl and epipen for one minute).
We have relatives that simply cannot understand why we keep going back to WDW. Why don't we travel other places? They don't get how this one thing makes our whole vacation that much better! So I don't worry, we just keep spending our vacation money where we can all have a safe and fun time!
When we make any reservations, we do let them know that we have a food allergy, so they send someone out right away to answer any questions.
By the way, the applesauce was sugar free from what I remember, and my kids didn't like it. We'd get something else other than it. I saw many folks tossing away cups of it with one bite out. Once DS mixed sugar packets into it!
If you want any specific questions answered, feel free to PM me. I feel very strongly in favor of what they are doing at WDW!
