We will be going in the middle of lunch and I would like some suggestions on what to bring for lunch!

Subway Sandwiches
Trail Mix
Cheese and Cracker packages
Peanut Butter and Cracker packages
Fruit Snacks
Bananas / Apples

I ended up with an entire backpack devoted to snacks but on our last trip we had 2 flights there and 2 flights back with 6-8 total flight hours each way.

we usually bring those lunchables that dont have juice in them, uncrustables, subway( like the other poster) our own small bags of chips/preztels..hope that helps

So do you buy these snacks/food at the airport after the security check? I know the last time we bought food at the airport and tried to get to the gate, we had to throw it away or eat it all on the spot...They would not let us take it through the security check point.

You're allowed to bring food through, we always have muffins and the like with us. Just make sure it isn't liquids like soup or pudding.

Last month we brought cheddar cheese slices, garlic Triscuits & grapes. DD also brought fruit rolls ups & pop tarts. We brought them through security without any problems. We of course had to purchase bottled water after security.

I placed everything in one of those plastic containers that you buy lunchmeat in, then threw it out when we got to the hotel.

You may want to avoid carrying on peanuts/peanut butter since there are people who are highly allergic. We like to take fruit snacks and little packages of crackers or pretzels.

Last trip I packed sandwiches - bought some bottled drinks in the airport after security. I usually also pack a variety of snacks - mini muffins, pretzels, crackers, etc. I like the lunchables idea - very convenient!:thumbsup2

I would say the easiest (but maybe not the most nutritional or cheapest) is to buy something at that airport after you get thru security. Most aiports have a McDonalds or Burger King or something and for litte ones you can get a happy meal with a toy that will help with plane time occupation. Also it might be a fun treat to start your vacation. Depending upon your flight time, if you get to the airpor early enough you can eat before you get on the plane so you won't have the mess and such of eating on a plane AND having to wait until taek off beforeyou can put your trays down to eat. If you eat at the airport you can pack some snacks (chips, cookies, fruit bars, etc) for the plane ride.

If you opt to bring your own food - many of the suggestions are great - anything portable and not too messy to eat would do. Just make sure to have it in clear ziploc bags and easy to access when going thru security. The less liquid or creamy consitancy (pudding, apple sauce, etc.) the better as those are the types of things they check for during secuity.

We always buy something at the airport after going through security. A sandwich or salad holds up fine until you are settled on the plane.

I've been thinking about this as well, as the second leg of our flight down is from 11 am-1 pm, and I have a 4 and 2 year old who are used to eating around noon. I'm planning on the Lunchables for them, as well as bananas or grapes. What I can't figure out is whether GoGurts (the tube yougurts) are okay. We eat a few of those a day here, and I'd love to bring them. They are each less than 3 oz. and would fit in a quart ziploc, and I would bring two. Has anyone ever tried bringing those? Also, I can bring juice boxes, right? Since I'm traveling with a toddler? So confused by all these rules now!

Seriously! I am supposed to avoid eating what I like in a public place since somebody MIGHT be allergic? Somebody who is not even in my travel party? Wouldnt this also be a problem for them then at the parks or restuarants as well?? I think that is a bit ridiculous. Sorry but that person's allergy is not my problem and I wouldnt expect anybody else to take special precautions for me expecially strangers not travelling with me. Lots of persons are allegic to something and I would have to live in a bubble to avoid carrying something that somebody is allegic too.

The go-gurts are liquid. (airline security told us as they were tossing them!) They were still a bit solid since we had forze them, but, oh well. This was our flight down to FL.
However, on our flight home, we could bring a bottle of chocolate milk and a bottle of juice because our twins were only 2 yrs. old and considered babies. DH forgot them in the backpack and security took them, and when they seen he was with me and the kids, they gave them back with an apology. We didn't even know we could!

best bet is to check the airline website for specific rules.

Alright, I'll bite (pun intended). No peanut allergies in my family but I have to say that the interior of an airplane is not quite like any other "public place." If something offends you there is really no way to escape.

I was a flight attendant for many years and smells, good AND bad, linger in the recirculated air of the cabin. So for all of those who like to travel without showering for a week, doused in your favorite perfume/cologne, reeking of cigarettes, or with your pungent food of choice, please know that you are sharing that smell with pretty much everyone 10 rows ahead and 10 rows behind you.

In a nutshell (there I pun again), common courtesy is EXTRA important in the air.

VERY well said!!! You made several very good points.

Thank you! Ironically, someone a few posts back mentioned having to live "in a bubble" to avoid offending anyone else. I think it's quite the opposite. Come out of your bubble, realize that you are NOT the only ones on the plane and maybe try to be considerate of others for a few hours. ;)

I was surprised last week when flying home from Miami on Southwest we were given peanuts (on both flights actually) - I would hope if someone had an allergy they would tell the flight crew well ahead of time, but how do you control what others bring on the plane- I had a snickers bar and the lady next to me was eating trail mix with lots of nuts in it- I guess they would just tell everybody they had to hold onto their nutty foods? Or what if I eat my trail mix just before boarding and you are next to me and I touch you or whatever. --Just wondering...

Last time home from WDW we took Earl of Sand on the plane- ahhh I can't wait to get there!

I am not sure about the juices with kids- just leave them home and buy something at one of the stores after security or bring crystal light powder things for water- also don't forget a sucker, gum or starburst (chewy things) to help their ears pop.

Generally if there is a peanut allergy on the flight, they'll ask that it be a "peanut free" flight. If your allergy is severe enough that being on the same plane as peanuts could be troublesome, you'll know to let the airline know well in advance.

If you call SW airlines ahead of time and tell them you have a nut allergy in your party they will usually serve pretzels on that flight, they will also give the seat area you will be in an extra vacumn and wipedown. I don't usually avoid eating peanuts or pb on a flight, but then I don't usually take peanuts or pb on a flight, but I wouldn't avoid it. I do take a empty sports bottle with me, so I and whoever I'm flying with can split a 5 dollar bottle of water. LOL

I usually have crackers or cookies in my carry on just as an emergency, but if I have a flight near a meal time I tend to just buy a sandwich at the airport and eat it while I'm waiting to board. With kids, then all bets are off and snacks are taken onboard, and it's whatever they will eat, which with my nephews is always an adventure. I am pretty picky myself and sometimes will not touch the snack they offer (breakfast bars, raisins, honey roasted peanuts, teryki beef stick, raisin oatmeal cookies or apple sauce have all been offered to me in the last 6 months and I don't eat any of them) so it's just easier to get my own food or snacks.

Lunchables, chips, goldfish, beef jerky, poptarts, crackers, a sandwich or even cookies would be pretty portable foods, just take sippy cups or sports bottles to share drinks (until you get your complimentary ones anyway).
