Why is it I have no problem dropping $36 on a character breakfast or $46 on a character dinner but I just cannot wrap my mind around $17.50 for a monte cristo as much as I try

So tell me this....does the monte cristo live up to the hype?

:rotfl2:

Well, I couldnt even finish it.
Its rich and fatty and sweet.... and some people think they are the best thing going! I think they are ok to good. But too too much on one plate. UG!
If you go to Cafe Orleans, now THOSE FRIES are TDF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While I agree that one per trip is pretty delish, I can barely eat half as it's pretty heavy. I split one with my sister and we both chip in on the bill, so it's not really that bad.

We went to Blue Bayou last Friday and with the soup and sides, I only ate 1/4. And there is was $24.99. Obviously, the price increase includes bread, soup or salad and the sides. Worth it, but still, verrrrry filling.

Hmm okay so it sounds like my 7yo son and I could easily split this if I ordered it.

And YES I want to trie the fries at Cafe Orleans!!!

You could absolutely split it. On our list trip our entire table split 2 baskets of fries (there were 9 of us) and then my mom & I split the Monte Cristo. While it was good, neither of us finished it!

So is it better to do split plate at BB or CO? Not talking atmosphere wise, but as far as sides, cost for split etc.

I don't know. We just asked for an extra plate at CO & I don't believe we were charged the split plate fee, although I am not 100% since I didn't pay the bill. We didn't get any extra sides (which were grapes) or jelly, but we didn't need them. I believe you get more sides at BB either way. If you want a 2nd salad/gumbo the split plate fee is probably worth it.

The three cheese one at CO is totally worth it, but I split it, could never eat a whole one myself!

AND the fries there are the best!!!

I love the 3 cheese monte cristo at CO, but always split it with one or more friends.

Rather than pay for the split, one of us orders a salad or something lighter and the other orders the monte, and we just split it up ourselves when it arrives. Works well.

I would call it "sharing" not splitting. There is a "split plate fee" at some places, share and NO FEE!.

Ya know...I don't have a problem paying for good food. We spent a small fortune at Blue Bayou but we loved the food. We tried the Monte Cristo at NOC and it was ok but not something we ever want to try again. I think I would have regretted not trying it though. Also, if you have a problem spending so much on it maybe order it as an appetizer type thing where you and others split just a little of it. We have 5 in our family and were barely able to eat it all since it is so rich. HTH!

1) I love Jack's idea to trade "share" for "split" to be clear that you are not trying for the split plate, complete with extra side(s) and extra cost.

2) It's easy to pay that much for a character breakfast because the food is not really the highlight; it's not the reason you are walking through the door. I just took my family to Medieval Times (Toronto) this weekend, and I don't feel I paid $70 for my "meal." I paid to be entertained while enjoying the meal, and it's the same at a character breakfast. It's something special you can't do other place. :-)
I do hope the MC lives up to the descriptions, though, because it sure sounds like something I would like (one half of)! popcorn::

The server at BB actually told me that if you share, there is no cost because they just bring a plate and you split it yourself and don't get extra sides. If you ask for a split order, you pay a fee because they bring each person a complete order of the sides and split it up for you before bringing it to your table.

We actually share a MC between 4 of us at BB! I and each of my 3 girls get 1/4 of the sandwich, which is conveniently cut already into quarters, and share the sides. It is very rich so that is plenty for all of us. If you look at it that way, the cost is very reasonable at $6 pp, LOL!

At CO, the MC does not come with sides, so the cost is less but you also get less food.

So the CO version is cheese only and the BB version has turkey and ham correct?

Hmmm decisions decisions

And THANK YOU to all who replied, love hearing the points of view.

CO has both the three cheese and regular versions. BB only has the regular one. I haven't tried either one and honestly, I probably never will. They just sound way too heavy.

I would say both versions are very decadent, especially the 3 cheese version. I happen to love both and don't mind paying for it. My husband and I often do the share thing though - one of us will order the MC and another will order a less decadent meal item, and we'll share.

I think you should try it at least once :)

My son could eat 2 of the regular(enlisted in the Air Force yeaterday and off to BMT) along with the sides, daughters just half. Too much grease for this old man and they do "share".

I would agree with everyone to split it. In my opinion, it's delicious, but very rich, and you want to save room for those yummy fries, too! As far as price goes, I don't mind paying it. We save for our DL trip so we can eat stuff like that and not feel guilty about it. If you can afford it, enjoy: )

What is this 'sweet' thing? I haven't tried it yet but despise 'sweet' in my sammich (DH would LOVE it). Are they both 'sweet?' Although I am all over the fries...YUM!

They have powdered sugar and there is jam to dip/spread on the sandwich.
