I came to the experts to help me decide… we have a 2 week family vacation planned during the time period that the F&W ½ is scheduled. I’m a casual runner, mostly trail running--I’ve been doing the mtns around here all thru high school, college and beyond. Not much pavement time since College, only the mtn trails--anyways… I had planned on running the WDW marathon 2011--
Is it selfish for me to run the marathon during our family vacation?? My DD is 5 and won’t be “up” for the race, which means her Dad won’t be there to see me cross the finish line for my first 1/2….:sad1:
To appease myself I did sign up for the Halloween 5k, that will be a no stress (other than the fact that I’m not staying at race hotel, I’ll have to use a taxi to get to the race) but it won’t take away from family time, they’ll be up, breakfast done and ready for the day by the time I get back to the hotel, at worst I’ll have to meet up with them later in the morning… So should I do the F&W ½ ? Is it selfish of me to even consider taking away from the family vacation? I haven’t mentioned the ½ to DH, only the 5k and he’s jealous, he wants to run it, but can’t because someone has to be with DD and they won’t allow strollers in this 5k, like they are for the royal family 5k….
So would you run the 1/2 or would you stick to the original plan and run WDW marathon in jan? Not to mention the fact that I’d like to run the Princess in 2011--but not sure I can swing three trips to WDW in 6 months…

What do you do race day? Does your family just go have fun in the parks while you rest up?

We'll be there from 9-25 to 10-9--will I destroy myself with park touring and crappy eating the week before the race??

so what should I do???

Welcome! I'm going to transfer your thread to the events side of WISH.

Stay with us and you will definitely not be running this event alone. I'm sorry your DH won't be with you to experience your first half if you choose this one. Being the person I am, I would say I would definitely do this. It will not take away from your vaca. I think it will enhance it since you will be so happy as your play in the parks after the event. It is a great way to build up to the marathon in January. You can pick an event near home that would be less expensive if it matters that DH be at the finish line. So many things to consider for sure.

I would bring up running the half with your DH and gauge his response. I know my DW would be more than okay with this because she knows how much I enjoy running.

While I cannot answer whether or not you should do the half, I would recommend getting a babysitter for DD so that your DH can watch you cross the line should you choose to race. You could also get a babysitter so both you and DH can run the 5k. Sign DD up for the Kid's Race and make the race weekend a family event. Just a thought.

I say go for it. the vacation is for you, too! It makes the trip so fun when you have something like that going on. Then you can proudly walk around the parks wearing your medal!

It would be pretty much impossible for me to be in any city during their marathon weekend and not participate in one of the events, let alone Disney, so I would be running it. This is why I attempt to date other runners, they would understand. :lmao:

I am 35 and a mom of four ;) (12,10 and twins 6).

I am doing my first 1/2, in March which is the Princess and my amazing hubby and children are staying home --- I know he would like to be there, but at the same time, I need sometime for me which this trip is also the first "me" time too that is away from home.

I will be doing the F&W too, and my children will be there, for this 1/2 since it is cheaper for all of us to stay.

Like everyone else, not to tell you what to do - but you have all day to be a mom and a wife on vacation - take some time for you to enjoy your vacation too.

Ive realized more and more that "me time" is OK and just as important as family time too.

Good luck with your decision, as long as its "YOUR" decision it will be right.
