Anyone know whats in the popcorn in the world?? any milk??? or soy??? I have a thing from special diets that implies its "just" corn and oil but I seem to remember flavoring on it and I wondered what that was. Anyone know for certain.

Thanks!!

We have a daughter with a severe dairy allergy and just got back from a long DW trip. Our daughter has had popcorn on all of our trips down there w/o any problems. We had been told there wasn't any dairy in our previous trips. We took the special diets sheet at face value this time, but you are right there is some butter flavoring/color on the popcorn that can't be just canola/coconut oil. Before I replied I thought I should do a web search. I found one allergy site article (go dairy free 2009) that said a vendor told them that the butter flavor on the popcorn had a dairy component. I found another site (Disney food blog 2010) that had a vegan vendor assure them that the popcorn is vegan (no dairy). I don't know if one is wrong or if they changed there butter flavorings, so you should probably ask a vendor when you are there. There may be a soy element in the butter flavoring, so I would ask about that also. If you find a definitive answer, please post it.

We have been told both yes and no about butter in the popcorn from the carts. We decided to take the safe route and get the bagged popcorn with the ingredients listed. Only crappy thing is the cart popcorn is a snack and the bag is not and they will not substitute like they do for other foods. But better safe than sorry. You can also e-mail the Disney special diets folks, they should have the most recent info.

I have a feeling that "ingredients subject to change" applies to the popcorn so perhaps that's why it's hard to find a consistent answer. I know they've changed the oil they cook fries in over the years. I was speaking with a young woman with severe dietary allergies who worked with the chef at Pop for years on each visit and had had no problems. Then they changed the oil and she wasn't aware of the change while the chef was not aware that the change would affect her. She wound up sick in her resort room for a few days before she discovered the problem by process of elimination with the chef. Disney changes vendors and contracts all the time- I'd definitely check when you're there vs. going by anyone's past experiences ( even though everyone has already told you they're not sure either!)---Kathy

I received this from Disney in August brfore our trip. It is on the Food Allergy/Dietary Reference Sheet, my son has a peanut/tree nut allergy so I asked for a list of foods and snacks. The popcorn is
Orville Redenbacher’s and, the
Popcorn Oil
Contains coconut, corn, and canola blend (produced in a plant that produces peanut oil).

I hope this helped.

I can't speak to soy but I can tell you that popcorn is a staple snack food for our family and 3 of us can't have dairy so I'm pretty sure we would have gotten sick quite a bit were these not vegan. I've checked with Orville Redenbacher as well and I do believe their ingredient and allergy statement. Our peanut issues are minor and we don't care about shared lines at all for that so we don't worry about that allergy statement. Sometimes I wonder just what kind of addictive substance they put in the popcorn though because boy do we crave that stuff when we're there. LOL

I also use the Orville Redenbacher popcorn oil at home for corn I put in the air popper. It's different than the stuff in teh parks but it's also really good. My kids will no longer eat microwave popcorn because this stuff's so good. Again, we don't worry about soy; I can't remember if there's soy in it or not.

As stated by others, ALWAYS confirm allergy info and vendors each and every trip even when you arrive. I generally ask for the allergy info around 1.5 months before each trip and even then I've had things change between when I received info and when I've arrived.

The info I got back from special diets is that currently their popcorn and its buttery flavoring are milk and soy free but to ALWAYS check with the vendors in the parks to verify nothing has changed. :cool1:
