Food Allergies - non Disney owned restaurants

We've eaten at Le Cellier several times with my son who has peanut, tree nut and shellfish allergies. They have always been very accommodating. I think in most places the chefs ask him what he wants - and they make it. We usually do not ask them what they recommend. It is just easier to start from the basis of "what I want" and go from there.

I remember that the pretzel bread wasn't safe but they had something that was - maybe a gluten free bread? They made that and it was delicious! (I had a taste). He asked for more and they gladly made it. They also made him a dessert and they've always made him a dessert if we ate dessert.

I think someone's satisfaction with a restaurant is MOSTLY influenced by the particular chef who they get to help them. I had a terrible experience at Chef Mickey's when he was little - 5 years ago - and I cannot be bothered to go back despite positive reviews by others - still carrying my grudge - LOL! I really think it was the idiot of a chef and not a reflection on the restaurant.

A few restaurants seem to have more bad reviews (for allergies) historically - but LC has generally been a positive experience.

Desserts at many TS restaurants are tough with allergies, Disney owned or not. Most restaurants don't make their own, get them from a third party supplier or a central kitchen. Other than fresh fruit or plain sorbet there might not be many dessert options to offer to accomodate the allergy.

I agree, some chefs are much more helpful than others.

I agree with this. Obviously, my experience at Le Cellier was much different from yours. I have tried both tactics of stating what I'd like to eat and asking what the chef thinks works. I've come to the conclusion that combination of both is usually what works, at least for me.

Just like you not going to Chef Mickey's, I'm pretty sure I won't be back to Le Cellier any day soon...they way I see it as long as you get good experiences at the places you like than go with that and don't worry about the ones that didn't work out. :thumbsup2

Yeah - you definitely got a bum deal at LC. That has consistently been our one of our best restaurants so that is disappointing. Hopefully when we go back we will not get the stupid chef - LOL!

I’m not sure which email address you used, but there are some to try in post #3 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread (the thread is near the top of this board or you can use the link in my signature to get there). The specific dietary information is in the alphabetic listing of Conditions and Concerns.
They may not be able to tell you much detail about the non-Disney restaurants, but should at least be able to tell you which ones they are.

I think one thing to be aware of for Boma and the Tusker House in Africa at AK is that peanuts are a common ingredient in African cooking in general.
I have seen people write the same about Boma as Selket wrote - it depends a lot on the chef.
I would suggest not eating at Tusker House with peanut allergies. They have a fabulous buffet and I am quite sure that the chef would point out any problem foods to you, but the children’s buffet included a large container of peanut butter - which was very messy, because children were making their own peanut butter sandwiches.

Was the tub @ breakfast or dinner? We have eaten there for breakfast 2xs and *knock on wood* haven't had a problem. But my new thing now is, I am going to ask the chef to bring food from the back, so I don't have to worry if tongs were used on a nut product on a nut product by accident. The chef @ Chef Mickey's offered that to us and it worked out great, he was very nice!

GL OP on whatever you decide. I *think* most of those restaurants at world showcase are not owned by Disney, I know Teppan Edo isn't and from what I understand Japanese cooking does not involve peanut oils, however Chinese cooking does.
