Fondant or Buttercream

Ok everybody got a question for ya. I am definitley a frosting girl, and I am thinking about the cake. The cake I really like uses fondant, but I know buttercream could be used. I am afraid that the buttercream maybe to rich for the chocolate and peanut butter mousse cake. What does everybody think? Also, did you guys have fondant, buttercream, or something else and did you like it?

i personally prefer buttercream, i find fondant gets really sickly too quickly!

Personally I hate the taste of fondant.. its thick, its gross, it tastes like a cardboard box. I would definitely look into buttercream!!

Disney only uses fondant for show. The cake has a thick layer of buttercream underneath, and the fondant is on top. They take it off before they serve it, so all you get is cake with buttercream! I'm not sure what it tastes like in florida, but out here at the DLR, the buttercream was the best I've ever had. I'm definitely not a frosting girl...I hate frosting. It's too sweet. Disney's was buttery and not too sweet. I could have eaten it by itself! LOL We had the Mickey's delight cake (I think that's what it's called...looks like the MGM water tower...lol) and it was covered in white fondant with silver mickey heads. No one was served fondant, though. I'm sure that fondant increases the cost of your cake, so only get it for aesthetic reasons. You certainly won't be eating it...

I've recently been into cake decorating, and you never just put fondant on a cake. There is always a layer of icing underneath to stick the fondant to!

i definatly do not want fondant because i am trying to save money on the cake for other things. But, i do not like buttercream. Is there any other choices that i can have that is similar to can icing??

I'm sure that fondant increases the cost of your cake, so only get it for aesthetic reasons.

I always thought that fondant increases the cost of the cake, but when I asked my WP to change the icing from fondant to butter cream, the price did not go down at all. I had wanted butter cream from the start, just because I like that old-fashioned look better. At first, my WP told me they could only do my design in fondant (a simple swiss dot design) but then the bakery said they could do butter cream. (The price is $8.50pp either way.) So... if you love the look of fondant, don't rule it out just because you're worried about cost. It seems that for some designs, the cost isn't any different for butter cream vs. fondant.

I had fondant on my cake, and when it was cut to be served to the guests, the fondant was taken off, as Cryssi said.

If you want the cake to look more smooth, go with the fondant. It adds a more polished look. If you want buttercream, and don't like the look of the fondant, choose the buttercream. The fondant isn't meant to be eaten, so it really just comes down to how you want your cake to look.

I know that our cake couldn't have had the white chocolate and sugar snowflakes had it not been covered in fondant. They would have to been piped on, and that wasn't the look I wanted.

i haven't been to our tasting session (yet!), but i don't think a buttercream cake with those fillings would be too rich. after all, most cakes come this way (even the ones with fondant, since you don't actually eat that part). let us know what you decide!

The chocolate peanut butter cake was soooo good! It was my top layer. We had fondant (Mickey's Delight) but there was a nice layer of frosting underneath the fondant. So its like the best of both worlds because it'll be pretty and tasty.

Like Cinderella_Fan said, the fondant gives a more polished look. It depends on what design you want. I had a square cake and it could not have been "finished" without fondant. Also, I had edible flowers cascading down my cake and those had to be made of fondant. I honestly don't remember if they took the fondant off before they served our cake, I'm guessing they did because it was buttercream frosting on the piece I ate and it was delicious!! Probably the best cake I've ever tasted!!

I HATE butter - looks like I'll have a lot of scraping to do before I can eat my cake (and I was so looking forward to eating it) I think the inside sounds sooo much nicer than the outside!.

As for the other icing options. I think ganache is a possibility. I also know Royal icing is a possibility, but that is strictly for decorating. I have a magazine at home that tells you the different icings and the taste/use of them. I will try and find it tonight.

After hearing that they fondant is strictly for show, I think I will stick with that. I was worried that that was the topping and it really has no taste to it at all. As for the buttercream tasting real buttery, well I will have to see about that later. Thanks for your help ladies.

hmm, then you might not like it. It's not like eating a stick of butter, though. It's more like unsalted butter with some sugar...I suppose you could try it, and if it's really awful to you, then scrape it off! It's pretty solid, so you shouldn't have any problem taking it off the cake.

as long as it's easy to scrape off then I'll be Ok - it's if it's gooey that I'll be in a mess (literally!!).
