We are going to be ripping out our carpeting and putting down laminate. We have a small wood stove that we only used one week last Jan. when we got back to back ice storms and lost electric. We now have a generator in case something like that ever happens again.
I would like to get rid of the wood stove (really bothers my allergies and Asthma) dh not so sure.

Would you keep or get rid of the wood stove?

I would get rid of it. It sounds more like a rarely used nuisance than a useful item.

if you ever intend to sell i would consider keeping it. around here new construction/renovations are very limited in being able to install wood burning devices. some places are implementing complete bans on new installation of wood burning stoves/fireplaces. so if it is not too much of a health issue (or you could cover it in some way to minimize the problems) i would keep it for the resale effect it could provide.

my mil has talked about pulling her fireplace out and re-doing the wall (she never uses it and it needs some costly repairs). we've encouraged her to leave it alone-she wants to sell in the next couple of years and lives in an area where fireplaces cost a huge amount to install (if you can get the permits to do so)-a buyer could come in and fall under "grandfather" laws that would allow them to repair or enhance the existing fireplace at much less than new would run. it makes her less than appealing home much more marketable.

Thank you both.

Obi-Wan, it really is a nuisance and in the summer heck even in the winter when the winds are hard (and we have had some hard winds this winter already) the winds blow down the chimney and even though it hasn't been used since last Jan. it still smells.

barkley, I think that is why dh is not sure he wants to get rid of it. Just in case we ever sell to move South.

Get rid of it. Wood burning stoves and fireplaces remove O2 from the air and can put an asthmatic at high risk, especially during an attack.

This is not always the case. In the Denver area you are banned from using them and they permanently disable them on you.

Thank you for information that I can take to DH to help push him into getting rid of it. The week we had to use it, I did have trouble breathing and a sore throat, thought I was getting sick.

Your welcome. Any other questions for an asthmatic and updating your home? BTW put in central vac if you can.

I vote get rid of it, unless you plan on moving.

Nope don't see us moving, as much as I would like to get away from the cold, snow and ice, DH just minds the heat to much to have summers any hotter than we get here.

Have you been listening in on our conversations? :teeth:
We were discussing this option also. DH does understand that my Asthma could get very bad at any time and is willing to do what needs to be done to help me. He just wasn't sure about the wood stove.
