Flying

I have never flown. Can someone tell me everything I need to know about flying?

I will try to help but need a few particulars first. Which airline are you flying, where are you flying from, flight times, do you have layovers or is it nonstop, are you renting a car etc?

Only have a little time right now but I'd like to give you something to start with. Don't worry too much about the actual flight. Sure there are some new sensations to experience but if you've been on theme park rides, these shouldn't be a problem.

I do suggest that you do all you can to familiarize yourself with the airport layout and especially security procedures before your trip. Also learn about what you are allowed in your carry-on and how to pack it, especially regarding liquids.

Definitely worth a trip to the airport to just get a feel for the place.

I'm sure others will be along soon. Gotta go to work!:)

When you get to the airport you will need to go to ticketing. This is where the big signs say "domestic departures"

If you have to check luggage you have two options (usually) you can use a sky cap, and they will do it on the curb outside for you, and they will issue you your ticket. If you do it outside you will have to tip the sky cap around 2 dollars per bag.-this service isn't available at all airports or with all airlines.

You can also go to ticketing inside (this is what 90% of folks do). You will need to locate your airline, and get in their line. There are always agents there to answer questions about what lines you need to be in. Then you will need to show your id and usually a credit card, or frequent flyer number. They will tag your bag, and you can proceed to security.

For security you will need to show the agent your boarding pass and your id. You will then go through the line. If you have a laptop you will need to remove it. You also can't have liquids that exceed 2 oz. If you do have liquids that are travel sized they need to be together in a plastc bag (or one that is see through) They give you bins to put your belongings in. They will want you to take off your shoes and coat and put them through the scanner.

You will then walk through the scanner, if you beep they will help you figure out why you are beeping. They might pull you aside for additional screening. This is random, and nothing to be concerned about.

The security agents can appear harsh at times, but they are just trying to be efficient, don't let them upset you or intimidate you, if you have questions just ask them.

Then you will need to find your gate and wait for your flight. It isn't a terrible experience at all.

Thank you! I don't know which airline we are using yet or where we are flying out of. We will not be renting a car. I don't know how much luggage to bring or anything. We will probably have a layover...which scares me with 3 kids.

This is incorrect. The liquid amount allowed is 3.4 ounces.

If you do it outside you will have to tip the sky cap around 2 dollars per bag.-this service isn't available at all airports or with all airlines.

Keep in mind that some airlines don't have curbside check-in. Also the normal tip for a skycap is $1.00 per bag. They can issue you a boarding pass; they don't sell tickets.

OP - There is a lot of information available on the internet on this subject. Do a Google search. Also read the information for travelers on the TSA website:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/index.shtm

Additionally, read the website for your airline for baggage info, ticket info, etc.

Okay. Since we dont know what airline you will you I will try to talk in general terms. I know that Southwest (bags are free) and Jetblue( first bag is free). As far as other airlines most charge you per bag varying fees per airline. With that in mind I would pack as little as you could and wash clothes if you have the option to do so. Also when packing my suitcase I either roll up my clothes to make more room or use space saver bags. Each passenger can take one personal item(purse, briefcase, computer etc) and one carryon per seat purchased (backpack etc). Check the airline website that you book from for specifics.

I have traveld with 2 small kids age 5 n 3. To keep them busy on the plane and at your layover stop take coloring books, leapster, things the they like to keep them busy.. Just make sure to take headphones just in case. Another useful tip is if you are taking your stroller to gate check it before you get on the plane. They will give u a ticket and you pick up your stroller after you get off the airplane. If you are not the only adult going put the kids between you and an adult on either side as you wait during layover.

It is usually easier to deal with less luggage on the plane and pick it up after you get to your destination. You can get a luggage cart to lug all your stuff if needed.

Hope this helps. Best of luck :)
