... anyone else hate it? :scared1:

If so how do you deal with it?

I have flown before but i really dont like it. The only thing going for me is that it gets me to the World faster than driving! :rolleyes1

Thanks,

Afraid

I hate to fly. I do it on a semi regular basis just because it's convienent and I'm not going to let fear get in my way.

My problem is that I can't see out the front window like where we are going and if nothing is coming at us. I also don't like sitting next to people I don't know.

I just bring a book and my IPOD and try not to pay attention to anything if I'm flying alone and if I"m flying with my husband I just curl up against him during take off and landing and then I read while attached to his side and he has to sit in the middle if there are other people next to us lol.

I think your sig says it all.

For He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways-- Psalm 91:11

thanks lovemygoofy! :thumbsup2

I hate it, my last trip was so horrible that I don't ever want to fly again. I have already done alot of traveling and due to a new job for my DH there is no vacation for us this year so I am not faced with that.
I am not scared, turbulence doesnt get to me. I just can't see in the light on planes well enough to read, end up way too hot and get claustraphobic. If I can take a red eye from CA to the east coast and take something to put me to sleep I usually do ok, it is the coming back in the daytime that sucks for me. Even on Jetblue with their Tv's I freak out. I am not much of a tv fan except for the news which they do have Fox news but sometimes there are no good news shoes on when I am flying.
No fear though its a weird thing.

I flew a lot when I was a kid, to Europe and Asia to visit family. But when I grew up, as an adult, I had my first panic attack on a plane, out of the blue, for no apparent reason. I suddenly became "aware" that I was enclosed in a flying tube, and I couldn't get out if I wanted/needed to. I got claaustrophobic.

Now when I fly, I take a xanax, and it allows me to actually enjoy the flight. I can relax, sleep, read, whatever, with no fear. I;m not bothered by sitting next to strangers, as I usually let it be knowwn right from the start that I'm not into conversation when I fly. I close my eyes, pull down my lucky baseball cap over my eyes, and I'm in my own world.

I wish I could fly somewhere right now, I'd be packed in 5 minutes if I had a ticket in my hand!

I'm not a fan of flying either. I've never liked heights, and I don't like feeling like I'm not in control. That being said, Xanax has become my friend for flying. I pop one right before I get on the plane and by the time we take off I am in my own little world. The effects have never been ultra long-lasting, so I am always good to go by the time we land.

I am determined to not let my immense dislike for flying get in the way of travelling.

what really gave me a fear of flying was...

back in '97 coming back from WDW we where about an hour in to our flight. Serving us meals (back b4 they gave you just pop) the plane hit some really bad turbulence... that didnt bother me... as the plane was shaking this special tone went off in the cabin... i am assuming to tell the attendants to sit down...the flight attendant standing next to me said.... (are you ready for this) "oh god we're in trouble"!!!!! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

So now i hate flying.

thanks for letting me vent.

I used to enjoy flying and I'm still not afraid to as long as I can get by with a carry-on. I don't even mind the security checks as long as I don't have to trust my property to the thieves who handle the checked bags. With security so tight you'd think someone would be watching them.

Haven't flown since I was in the womb and I don't plan on it!:scared1:

A few things help me through long flights-
I try to dress so I can remove a jacket if it's hot, or leave it on if it's cold. I have a warm winter scarf-dark colored that I keep folded up in my travel bag. It's just right to throw over my arms if I don't want to mess with a jacket. No battling for a blanket from the airline.
I always bring a bottle of water and a bag of peanut m&m's. A little protein, and they aren't messy.
Flying is when I buy magazines-I generally don't. I pick up several, and read away. It's my little treat!

Like a PP said, Xanax is my friend when flying. I also have to have an aisle seat (werid I know..people fight over the window seat!!)

But after taking a Xanax and reading through half a magazine, I'm out like a light. And surprisingly, I'm not tired and run down the rest of the day!!

I used to enjoy flying but the last three or four flights have left me feeling horribly nauseated and not feeling well. I normally get car sick if I'm in the back of a smaller car, but had never before on a plane! And while I don't rack up the miles that a business person would, I did fly about four times a year.

But I would give anything to not feel so sick. I once thought I was going to need the 'barf bag'.

I have tried all the anti anxiety drugs including get this 3 mgs of xanax. It will put me to sleep for awhile but I wake up and sit there trapped with nothing to do. I wish I didn't have retinitis pigmentosa so that a travel book light would even help me. It is so hard to expalin to people that glasses don't correct what is wrong with my vision only really bight light does so that is why I can be on a computer. Just sitting there awake on a plane is torture for me.

I hate to fly. My DH got his pilot's license last year and wants me to fly with him, but it scares me half to death. I'm finally ok with big planes, but little one prop tin cans are an entirely different story!

That would have done it for me too!

When I flew for the first time since 2000, I was with my DBF. The combination of the Xanax, crying and him got me through it. We're flying again in September and I'm nervous already but I just keep trying to think about the fun and exciting trip we have planned!!!!

I will be flying for the first time in a few months and the approx. time of my flight (to Asia) will be anywhere from 16-20 hours. I am TERRIFIED! I have the Xanax and my Dr. even told me that I can take them every few hours if needed but I'm still scared. The one quote that I have been living by is one that I saw on a church sign,

The Will of God WILL NOT Take you where HIS GRACE can not PROTECT you!

I've been living by those words.

oh and out of curiosity, how do the attendants etc. handle panic attacks as I'm sure quite a few people have them.

I knit when I fly. It doesn't take as much concentration as reading, but it keeps my hands and my mind somewhat occupied.

Well I didn't have a panic attack per say. I have anxiety issues pretty bad. Panic attacks usually subside and don't last 6 hours or more. I was on the plane sweating profusely and shaking and my MIL just kept reading her book and the flight attendants never asked me what was wrong. It took me hours after the flight to calm down and about a week to recover enough to function. This was on jetblue. I don't know how other airlines deal with it. One time my husband freaaked out due to fear on a flight to SLC and he stood at the back of the plane in the galley and was like gripping the walls like he was holding the plane up and none of the FA's said anything to him either. He eventually concurred his fear with the help of ativan and beer before a flight. It worked for him. Like I said I am totally not afraid to fly it is just pure hell for me on flights longer then an hour.

I hate flying, but it's necessary in order to get to WDW, so I deal with it! Not only does flying freak me out, but I get motion sick. Had to use a barf bag once, so I learned my lesson. :scared: Now I don't go on a plane without taking Dramamine. It has the advantage of not only curbing my motion sickness, but it knocks me OUT! I just sleep the whole way so I don't worry about anything. I don't think I could ever fly alone though, because the pills have such an effect on me. I need someone to take care of me during layover and make sure I get on the next plane since I am soooo out of it! :upsidedow
