Flying with Special Dietary Needs

I am not sure if I am in the right spot to get an answer but I have my fingers crossed. I have read the TSA site several times but still am a little nervous. Would love to hear someone's direct thoughts on if this will be a problem.

Our 6 year old son is profoundly mentally and physically disabled. He also is on an extremely limited diet and requires that all his food be pureed/mashed finely and liquids thickened. He takes a special drink mix for his drinks as well. Sooo . . . . . my question is can I fly with everything I need to ensure I can feed my son on the plane? And IF (I hope we won't) we get delayed can I have a little extra just in case? My plan right now is to take the following: 2 sippy cups with his special formula mixed in a cooler with an ice pack and jarred baby rice cereal (2 - 6 oz. each) and 2 - 3.5 oz plastic sealed containers of baby food. FINALLY - he has to have ALL his liquids thickened so he doesn't aspirate. This would require a powdered thickener. We cannot thicken it first. So we would have to take a can of thickener as well (its a white powder in a medium sized can). I will also be traveling with his medication in our carryons.

Does anyone have any comments as to whether my plan will be ok? Is there anything I need to change or remove? It's truly what he needs. I cannot think of anything the airline could give me to give him in case of a delay so that's why I think I need to have "something" just in case.

I hope someone has some thoughts to share. They are always appreciated.:lovestruc

Medical items do not need to be under 3 oz (don't put them in your quart-sized 3-1-1 bag). You will need to take the liquid and any gel items from your carry-on bag for going through security (as well as your quart-sized bag that holds any non-medical 3 oz. items you might have) so they are screened separately. Explain that they are for your son's medical needs. If you are really concerned about coming across a stupid TSA agent (and there are a few, LOL!), you could get a note from your doctor, but that isn't something you must have in order to get medical items through security.

Powder is not a problem (not on any can't-have list) and it can remain in your bag for security.
