Should I put the tape in my carry-on or checked bag? My understanding is that the checked baggage x-ray is much stronger than what carry-on bags go through and I don’t want my tape erased.

I think I have flown with VHS tapes in my checked bag before without even thinking about it and had no problem but can’t remember for sure.

Anyone have any insight on this?

Thanks!

I would say carry on just to be safe but I don't think xrays will hurt a VHS tape. It's not film. Think of it like a computer diskette or a digital camera memory card.

I am not sure which is best, but I do know my sister just flew to see my mom and she packed copies of ALL our home videos in her luggage (20 tapes or so) and each arrived perfectly, and mom has already watched them all =)

We carried the camcorder bag thru carry-on and the x-ray definitely didn't do any damage since we were able to watch the tapes.
