southwest air says that they have a children's rate...but there is no place to put in child or adult or ages etc. on their website...if I need to book our trip with a child rate included...do I need to call and do it...what is your experience with this?

You do have to call the customer service phone line, 1-800- I FLY SWA to get any information about the childrens fares. I called Southwest about this when I booked for our June trip. The ticket lady on the phone told me that they do have childrens fares but, the advertised specials and the internet specials are usually cheaper. She did not give me the rate, ut did tell me that the sale fares would be cheaper. Hope this helps!

Unless the flight is sufficiently sold that you will be paying the "refundable anytime fare" for the adults on the flight, you will end up paying less for the seat if you book it online without specifying the age of the passenger. The "infant" and "child" fares are discounted off the highest fare class only; the discount varies, but is usually about 15% off.

Also, booking online earns 1.5 RR credits per flight segment, while booking by phone gives you only 1 RR credit per segment. (Yes, it's a carrot to get you to book online.)
