We are flying tomorrow and DD has a horrible head cold (which I may be in the process of catching). Anyone has any ideas to make the flight more comfortable? I can't really cancel and she's really sick. :(

Anti-Inflamatories. Advil Cold and Sinus.

When I was a flight attendant, I made the stupid mistake of flying with sinus infections. Advil C&S always made me more comfortable. One word of advice: If her pain/pressure is REALLY bad, just be careful. I ruptured an eardrum once when I flew with a sinus infection. It's STILL not "normal" to this day. :(

I wouldn't cancel, but I'd be careful.

She may end up with a sinus infection after the flight. Do you think her doctor might prescribe an antibiotic just in case she needs it after the flight? I used to have a doctor who would do that for me as I tend to get sinus infections after flying. My present doctor will not do that. She tells me to start taking loratadine a few days before flying.

I flew once with a head cold. It was MISERABLE. The pressure was horrid. I can honestly understand how you could rupture an ear drum. Talk with the dr about the BEST decongestant/ anti-inflammatory.

How long is your flight? Years ago, my dr. advised against flying over 3 hours with a cold. Of course, you should check with your dr.--I am sure things have changed. I was also advised to start taking an antihistamine 24 hours before the flight, make sure that it "worked" during the flight, and to use a saline nasal spray at takeoff and landing.

I would try Xclear (http://www.amazon.com/Xlear-Nasal-W...ef=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1316700036&sr=1-2)

It is a nasal wash that contains Xylitol. It is all natural, non addictive and has a slight antibiotic effect (as per my doctor).

If you keep using it (once every couple of hours or until you head is clear) it really helps. My daughter and I have seasonal allergies and we use this now. She no longer needs any prescription meds.

You may still want to take an antihistamine as the others suggested but the Xclear will help flush out all the gunk and clear her head.

Best of luck!

I made a doctor's appointment as a precaution. It will be a short flight (2 hours), and if the doctor is really against her flying, I can always drive. I'd rather not.

I don't recommend flying with heavy congestion. You are almost guaranteed to get an ear infection. If you can, you'd be better off driving.

Take a decongestant before you get on the plane and do a sinus rinse.

Also, buy her some EarPlanes. They are the best. I have very sensitive ears and can't fly without being in discomfort, with or without a cold.

Hope she feels better!

Just got back from the doctor, who cleared her to fly. I will follow the suggestions here. I hope she'll be OK.

Use a nasal spray right before she boards the plane. It will help a LOT. This is the voice of experience talking! She should be fine for landing, too, with just that one use, since it's only two hours later.

Afrin Nasal Spray. I had to fly, for work, days after my ear drum burst. My ENT suggested Afrin Nasal Spray. Clears out everything! I've flown many times with colds, and never had any problems while using this!
