This is my first time flying with a laptop. What is the current protocol for this? Any tips?

TIA for any help!

Remove it from your carry on and place it in its own bin. I travel with mine in a neoprene type sleeve and don't remove it from that. Nothing else has to be done.

Each airport has their own procedures, so take it out of whatever container it's in and put in a bin by itself. Better to get through security without having to be told to take it out and run it through again.

I had to take my netbook out of it's sleeve at MCO last Dec. Drives me nuts that there is no consistency.

I agree that you won't find any consistency in how TSA treats the laptop flying public. Don't even expect the same airport to be consistent from one trip to another.

One thing that has worked well for me is to get one of those checkpoint friendly bags. All I do is unzip the computer compartment and lay the bag flat on the belt.

I agree with the poster about the checkpoint bag. I travel frequently and have had no problem with this approach. Without a bag such as this you will be fine at all airports with removing and putting in a bin without anything else in the bin. Happy travels.

Of course there is no consistency. Having worked in security at one point, lack of consistency is one of the strongest tools. The last thing you want to be is predictable. Predictability let's people figure out ways to get around security. So don't let it drive you nuts, it's there to make things safer.

At this point, laptops will always be separately scanned but there will be some inconsistency about specifics like cases. Just be prepared for it.

I travel with my laptop on business all the time. Just take it out and put it in a plastic bin by itself. Never have a problem. Years ago they used to sometimes take it and swab it for explosives but it's been a long time since I've had that done.
