Flying to TPA instead of MCO

Have you ever done this to save money on your airfare? If so, how was your experience, and how long is the drive from TPA to WDW? I'm still struggling with my December airfare, prices are so darn high for the week I am going, but flights to TPA are 1/2 the cost.

There's another recent thread about this. I've read many good reviews by people who have done this which is why we have decided to do it for our April 2010 trip. It was so much cheaper, even with a rental car.

I did this a few years ago. the travel time to Disney was about 1hr and a half.

We are doing this for our trip next week. We had planned on renting a car anyway since we are staying off property. I have driven from Tampa to Disney before and like pp said it's only an hour and a half. We got better flight times too out of Tampa. We arrive at 11:25am compared to 6pm and leave at 6:55 pm compared to 6:30am.

We just did this in June since our return flight was the Sunday before July 4. We were struggling with the cost of our return flight since Sunday was the beginning of the holiday week. Since we were planning on renting a car no matter where we flew into, we thought we would give this option a try. We thought it was nice flying in and out of this airport. The security was much less crowded and it is a really nice airport. You really have to factor in the difference in rental car costs. If you are staying on property, you can check out 1 day rentals for airport transportation. Alamo is at the Car Care Center and National is in the Dolphin. Good Luck with your planning!

Done it before, wouldn't hestitate to do it again if the savings were significant enough.

We have found it adds about 35-40 minutes in travel time when renting a car - and it wastes no time compared to DME.

Tampa flights have MUCH fewer children and were about $300 cheaper to fly there. Plus they have a killer mall a few blocks away - if early we go shopping.
