flying to DW - take own mini fridge and microwave?

and no microwave needed for tea. Use a heating coil, or use the coffeemaker without the filter and open the lid on the pot. I do both with no issue, and I drink tea every night.

Plus one can hard boil eggs or make soup in the coffeemaker - there used to be a recipe book for 'cooking in a coffee maker'!

Won't it be easier to just rent a house or room that has a kitchen? Come on,frigdes, microwaves? Whats next a grill from home? how about a mattress ,because the hotel beds are too hard or soft. Just rent the fridge.

I have seen lots of folks say they took a crock pot -- which I am not interested in -- but I just wonder since Disney told me I cuold use a microwave anytime I wanted as long as I unplugged it when we leave the romm.......how do you leave a crockpot plugged in all day? Just curious.

For whoever suggested a coffee maker for water......no thanks. We don't drink coffee and I think that water would taste like coffee.

I retract my helpfulness on this thread.

I suppose that I must not have as educated tastebuds as I drink tea like that all the time.

I have had that too but if you take the whole filter holder off, then you are removing anything that has come in contact with the coffee and you don't get that taste.

To each his own though I sure wouldn't want to do it. I too think the extra luggage fees would get you.

Have you considered buying one there, then just leaving it? It could be worth the money, depending on what you save.

That's what we did on our first trip to Hawaii 2 years ago. We stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on Hilton Honors points, but just to eat there was costing us more than the room would have! We bought a small microwave from Walmart (they're everywhere!) along with some simple foods to heat up, etc., got a small, cube-type fridge for free from the hotel. We just left the microwave behind, it cost about $40, saved that on one meal. The HWV is huge, you walk miles just to get out of the place, and kids always get hungry in the middle of the night!

If you're flying to WDW and won't have a rent car, you can order groceries delivered from www.wegoshop.com Their prices are quite reasonable for the service, and they can buy just about anything, you can even specify the store. You could have them pick up a small microwave, some foodstuff for the room (don't forget paper plates, forks, etc), then either rent a fridge from the hotel, or you could have wegoshop pick you up a styrofoam cooler at Walmart, then just leave it behind as well.

I think you're smart to try to plan some meals in room. Not anything elaborate, just simple things like sandwiches, soup, hot dogs, maybe frozen dinners, breakfast stuff, etc. True, you will be doing most of your eating while out of the room, but you need to be preapred for the kid who gets the hungries in the middle of the night and the eateries are either closed or a long hike away.

This has been my experience, even after washing the carafe and removing the filter thingy. However, I picked up a 2 cup hot pot at a yard sale several years ago for a buck (they don't cost that much more new) and we use it for tea, hot cocoa and oatmeal.

Before the moderates supplied free fridges we alway packed a soft-sided cooler in our luggage and used it in the room We put the juiceboxes in baggies (they don't like getting wet) as well as the icecubes in baggies. On the trip home, we filled the cooler with dirty laundry (in plastic bags) and checked it as luggage.

I like Bavaria's idea of the sandwich maker...

Isn't the Hilton Waikoloa Village the BEST place in the world? That is about the only place that I really want to go other then Disney. We stayed there 3 years ago on Hilton Honors Points too...lucky then my DH was a platinum member (he was living in Hilton Hotels probably 250 nights a year) so we got a suite with the concierge service so we had free breakfast, snacks at lunch time and hors d oveurs before dinner...so that REALLY helped on the cost.

We are saving our points to go again (right now we have enough for a 2 week stay) when we are ready to make the flight again with the kiddos.

People were suggesting a hot pot like this one

http://www.amazon.com/Rival-4071WN-...r_1/102-7174518-9798537?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden

since you mentioned needing it for tea, cocoa, instant oatmeal, etc. It's cheaper and a lot smaller than a microwave! I like the idea someone said about the hot pot and the sandwich maker or toaster, seems like a lot less trouble and expense.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

Sounds to me like a hot pot and a cooler is the way to go!

The fridge/micro just sounds like too much work, plus what do you do if the airline screws up and either a) breaks them so you can't use them once you get there or b) they get lost? You're out the money for the fridge/micro AND you can't cook in the room, meaning you're eating out anyway. Even if they come out fine, you still have to lug them to/from the resort. I'm all for saving money, but there comes a point where the effort you put into it isn't worth the savings you get. Plus if the fridge/micro gets lost or damaged, it could COST you money rather than save it!

Good luck, no matter what you decide! :)

Once again, DIS to my rescue! I thought I was being a little nutty for trying to figure out if a toaster would be too much to pack in my luggage! And gotta admit, was wondering what I could do about tea for DF - I'm a coffee fiend, so now way could he use the coffee maker! Love the hot pot idea, so I think I'm set!

I wonder what happens to all of the Walmart fridges being left at these various WDW resorts? (Among other appliances.) Next year when I go back and if I'm staying at a value resort I will ask ahead of time and see if I can use one without charge. It never hurts to ask! :confused3

We brought a hot pot with us on our trip in January--we paid $15 for it at Walmart--it heats up really quick and we used it for tea and hot cocoa.

You will not be allowed to bring a refrigerator with you on the plane and I know this for a fact!! It contains a coolant and the airlines will not allow it because a line could break in transit. We went thru this last summer when we camped at FW--We ended up shipping an air conditioner down using USPS and bringing a cooler.

I can't help on the microwave being allowed on the plane but if you are only going to use it for a few items it would be better left at home and getting a hot pot.

They go to the resort lost and found for a day then they are taken to property control and sold to cast members.

You won't be allowed to use one.

That is just plain wrong. Coffemakers are not pots for eggs. ewwww

we use the mic in the food court and make a swing by Wal-Mart (either in our rental car or take a cab - worth the money for the cab if you stock up on lots of stuff there)

and while we are picking up these items:

Peanut butter/jelly/plastic silverware/bread/snack crackers/pringles/drinks/drinks/more drinks/juice/fruit/pretzel sticks....you get the idea. on a super budget trip, we might get dogs and buns and microwave meals and nuke them in the food court microwave.

we also snag a syrofoam cooler for about 2 bucks and some ice.

refill ice from the ice machine at POP.

leave the cooler with a note saying up for grabs outside of our room on checkout day....it has never been there for more than 15 min before someone comes by and snags it.)

Is this a serious post?

After all the planning and excitment of a WDW vacation, would you really consider taking a microwave and fridge?
Why?

I know the obvious reason is to save money, but there are other ways to do so. Maybe some non-cooking snacks/meals. A nutrigrain bar, or cereal.

Maybe eating on larger meal at a restaurant or 2 small meals. Meal sharing is an option too.

No offense to posters, just trying to understand.

There is being thrifty and there is being cost conscious, but then there is some stuff on this thread that is just :scared1:

I take it you don't make eggs in a coffee pot or press your grilled cheese sammiches with an iron?

hey, I was just trying to be helpful to the OP and offer some alternatives, but I get the feeling that OP doesn't want alternatives.....;)
