For those of you who fly......I have a question.

Have any of you taken your own microwave and mini frig?

I am seriously considering this -- if we do magicial express, what would keep us from taking a mini fridge and microwave? We could check them as bagage.

We will be at POP for a week. I'm thinking the $10 a night for fridge rental would surely pay for the frig if we bought one.

I looked on the frig swap and our week isn't available.

Then, we'd have it for every other trip we take.

Has anyone done this?

have you checked luggage restrictions for you airline?

There are hefty fees now for going over on weight.

Way too much work for me . Can't even imagine it.

Also are you sure you can have a microwave in the room?

For safety reasons you aren't allowed to cook in a room and I would think a microwave would still be considered cooking.

Besides that it sounds like way too much work.

I am sure you are right on the safety thing...and I TOTALLY agree about the being WAY too much work. There is just no way. Check out fridge swaps, bite the bullet and pay to rent one from the hotel or upgrade to a moderate the includes it!

Also think about those items getting there SAFELY...I don't know about you, but I have had several things broken in transit on planes, I can't imagine what they could do to a microwave or fridge!

Very ambitious but way too much to deal with. I think I would opt for a styrofoam cooler and ice before hauling a fridge.

:lmao: :lmao: You are joking right?

Who would ship a microwave and fridge to a motel room? Why go through all that trouble to save a few dollars? Hardly seems worth it.

Have you considered maybe a folding cooler for your refrigerated items? We have a pretty large one that packs into the luggage. Before we started staying at DVC resorts, we used to take the cooler along and refill it daily or twice daily with ice from the machines. We'd actually fill heavy-duty freezer bags with the ice and it did a good job keeping juice boxes, waters, and even some cream cheese for bagels nice and cool. I don't know if trying to juggle a microwave and fridge along with all the other luggage is worth all the trouble....but that's just MHO :)

Why dont you pack a plastic cooler in your luggage and then just get some ice from an ice maker at your hotel, and what could you possibly need a microwave for???!!!! You are on vacation which means you "eat out" and if you arent going to do that, I wouldn't suggest staying at POP and stay at a condo or embas. suites that offer the fridge/microwave. I realize maybe sometime the food is good but not that good to take the trouble of taking it back to the hotel, storing it, then heating it up. We stay at the WL and we get the refillable mugs and use those for free and they have a microwave where the CS food is, maybe check and see if POP offers that. I know ours is usually open until midnight and opens at 7 if not earlier. Also, the Pop rooms are small, I dont know how many ppl are going with you but if you have 4 ppl, plus luggage, plus toys, and other goods that room will fill up quick. If you really need those tho, I would suggest finding another hotel or condo.

At Pop, there is a microwave in the Food Court that you can use; don't bring one. Regarding a fridge, you'd have to pay extra to ship as baggage, and dollars to donuts it would be damamge. I would just buy a collapsible cooler, pack it in your suitcase, and use that.

I so wish that was true. I wrote to Disney to ask, so I could prove to those here who wanted to cook that they couldn't. Imagine my surprise (and egg on my face) when I was told that you could have appliances in your room, but they request you unplug them when out of the room :( I hate the thought of smelling someone's cooking in my bedroom. I hope someone else writes and they tell her the first note from guest services were wrong.

I too couldn't be bothered, since there is a micro in the food court.

That said...popcorn::

Hi GrumpyGal, sorry our swap couldn't accomodate you. I completely agree with others. I wouldn't bring a fridge (or micro) on the plane. I think the fridge box may be oversized, as far as the airline is concerned, and then it would cost you extra to bring. Also, you've seen the way they throw around luggage-the fridge wouldn't hold up.

If you are thinking of buying a fridge anyway (you could have it shipped to you if you don't have a car) then why don't you start a mini-swap? Maybe get 3, or 4, swappers to join in, split the cost between you all (about $15 each, or so) and then let the fridge go into unclaimed storage. Arranging a small swap would be fairly easy. You could even just do 2-3 families only.

I know I have your dates somewhere in my records, but I would be willing to check dates around your time to see is there were any others I had to turn down, that may be interested. If you're interested, send me your dates again.

Bought a Micro for our DL trip staying at PP. Walmart was not that far away.

We never cooked full meals but Popcorn and a few other smaller things it worked out great we had a dietary need for it and called before we booked the room. They said no problem Just to be in the room when in use.

I then left it with a note for mousekeeping with the reciept (cash transaction) to either keep it and use or to return it and keep the money .

Let manager know I was doing this so it wouldn't cause any trouble and never heard a word.

You know many places now provide you with both these items now. Even Disney has them in many places on-sight.

I never got the don't want someone cooking in the room next to me thing. I don't want to here water running early in the morning or kids screaming at the top of their lungs but thats part of Hotel living.

FYI
Security will not let you take a microwave on the plane as check in luggage.
So you will either have to ship it or check it, which means hefty fees.

Well, there will always be debate on room etiquette and I'm not going to make a stink about either side of the cooking issue except to say that if we were to be told by management that it was against the rules, then we wouldn't do it.

I will say, however, that my family has saved hundreds of dollars by picking a few evenings to prepare dinners in the room. Of course, we have tried to be thoughtful to the extent that we generally make pretty bland foods and don't stink up the joint with particularly aromatic foods.

Edited to add: I think the idea of taking a fridge by plane is reeeaaalllly pushing it. I'd bring a cooler or rent a fridge from Disney.

I would also like a micro in our room!

I'm used to it when we travel elsewhere and if any of you have teenagers you will know that cold pizza for breakfast, lots of left over dinner portions from toddlers and popcorn are a staple in large families!

POR has a mini fridge so I am good there. I was thinking of a mini swap for a tiny micro to fit on top of fridge. same flat surface space , just a few a foot higher or so. . .I would either purchase at wally world in town or have it shipped ahead to resort. . .

a mini swap would cover the cost easily I would think?

I think it is a great way to save a few bucks. Also have a little one who still likes warm milk at night. . .

Our first DW trip we flew with a cooler that you plugged in and it traveled just fine. Had no problems and at that time we didn't have ME we rented a towncar and it worked out fine. The 2nd trip we stayed at SOG and thus had both in the room, 3rd trip was too short to worry and the 4th well we did the fridge swap. Would do any of the four options again.

Both of these would fall under the electronics exclusion. In other words if broken or lost you get nothing.

(Not to mention the luggage weight issue. How much does a mini-fridge weigh?)

Picture them both going down the luggage chute. Now think back to when you first bought that light colored luggage, how'd it look when you went to the baggage claim area to pick it up?
