Flying, tent camping, and security (with no rental car)

We have stayed at the Fort previously with no rental car. We just flew with our gear and camped in tents for nearly two weeks. No theft issues, etc.

I've been reading about security changes and now I am concerned. We keep all of our valuables with us at all times, but the kids do sometimes buy toys, etc and we can't carry those around with us for nearly two weeks, so those get left in the tent.

I'm seriously considering renting a car just to have a place to lock up our things.

Do I really need to be worried about this? Are the security issues now bad enough that we need to spend an extra $300 on renting a car that would merely be used as a locker? (Well, that and used for one day to go to Harry Potter at Universal.)

Thanks for any tips

Just me, but if I were camping with kids I would want to have a car at my disposal in case of minor emergencies and not have to rely on public transport. It's also a good place to get if you have a really bad thunderstorm....and Florida is known for some doozies.

It honestly is not a huge issue. Especially if the things you mention are "out of sight". Since you are flying in with your tenting stuff, you will probably have some type of container that can be locked. (I used a plastic footlocker that is airline legal). Just lock anything you are concerned about inside that footlocker, then leave it in your tent.

Theives are lazy and want to be unobserved. If they are entering the Fort by vehicle, they are not going to be rummaging in tents, they are going to be grabbing things they can grab quickly.

As far as not having a car for emergencies, don't worry about it. For a true emergency, a taxi is just a phone call away and the comfort station laundry is a great place to hang out in a severe thunderstorm.

We are griping and moaning mainly due to the potential that there will be more vehicle traffic "inside the Fort", and inconsiderate folks will just park their vehicle wherever they please.

if your worried--buy a lock and put it on the zipper of your tent. I wouldn't shell out an extra $300 bucks when a $5 dollar lock would do the same thing. If someone is gonna steal something anyways,....a car vs a tent really wouldn't stop someone who were gonna do it anyway:confused3

Thanks everyone! We did fine with a lock on one of our bins in the tent last time, so we'll do the same this time. We had a major T-storm in our tents last time and we were fine, although if it had gotten much worse, we would have gone to the laundry room. As for emergencies, cabs will do the trick. We've had sick kids twice at WDW and both times Disney staff was super helpful.

Thanks for the reassurance. I guess what we probably need to worry about more is the traffic going through to look at Christmas lights!
