Does anybody have any tips for a weary flyer? It's soooooooooo scary!

I take Xanax becuase I don't like flying. My doctor gives me a prescription just for flying.
It chills my nerves and makes me snooze for half the flight.

It's something to think about.

Im not sure what part of flying makes you nervous.. but if its heights.. its not that bad. Im very very afraid of heights.. we are talking 6+ feet of the ground and I get shakey and nervous. So I too was very afraid. Ok.. major oooober afraid. Everyone at my job new that my trip was getting near becauseI couldnt shut up about being scared of flying. I just recently flew for the first time, to disney of course, this month and I survived!!!!! To me it felt like we were in a motion simulator the whole time.. even looking out the window it seemed very surreal. I actually took the window seat on the way back home for better views. But just know that noises of the plane are normal, vibrations etc. On the way back to detroit we hit mild turbulance entering the snow storm. I was calm the whole time. Some of my favorite views was allthe lights of our city at 6am in the air, the view of the ocean as we flew the coastline and the view of the mountains! breathtaking!! THe only problem that I had was the pressure changing within the cabin.. chew gum and yawn like crazy even if you dont feel tired! lol I hope our words can ease you. :wizard:

My husband has flying issues too. But knowing how much I love Disney, he talked to his doctor and has an rx for valium. I dope him up and off we go! :cool1:

valium (a strong one) and a martini did the trick for me. i fly a lot and i've find this combonation works for me. tried just the valium. tried just the martini. neither worked. but together it did the trick.

Hello ~

I too, am not a great/good/tolerable flyer....my Dr. recommended non drowsy Dramamine and I also do yoga and use calming breathing techniques, it helps me a lot, and I also try to focus on a 'fixed' item on the plane (don't laugh, but I usually stare at the back of the seat...think Seinfeld with Elaine and Puddy coming back from Oslo...) or if I'm on a large plane, I try to watch the movie...but dear God, I can't read or look out the window, my motion sickness will kick in and it's all over from there....hope that helps!

Be aware that it's nearly impossible to predict if meds will work for you. Valium does nothing for me, so my brother gave me some Xanax. One pink pill puts him under the table, but it did nothing for me. I only take something when I know the flight will be very turbulent...the next time around, I took two pink pills and slept for the whole flight. Good dose for me, but he said it would make him comatose. You may want to experiment beforehand.

I've flown my whole life (I'm 35) but had a period of time where I didn't fly for about 10 years. Before I finally flew again, I worked myself up into a tizzy. I've taken Xanax but I really don't like feeling "high" (could NEVER EVER be a pill popper). What did work for me was wine. It made me feel very relaxed and carefree. I'm only really nervous during takeoff/landing and if it get really turbulent but I've come to understand (the hard way) that if I could survive the return trip from Maui, then I can survive ANYTHING! I'll be flying again in February and I'll be drinking my wine!

Please understand that I am not flaming anyone, but this is bad advice. NEVER drink when you take drugs such as Xanax, valium, or any painkillers. Sorry, but the nurse in me could not let this go by.

My wife hates, hates, hates to fly!!!
Last March we drove from Boston to WDW, 1350 miles and 23 hours later we were walking around DTD. No Problems, easier than I thought it would be for a long drive with a 3 year old.

Look at it on the bright side, not. These people give you job security. I can't believe the one who took two, let alone one, Xanax without a prescription.

Great nurse's think alike. I had the exact same reaction. Never, never drink and take sedatives/hypnotics or pain killers.

there is a cd just $59.95 (In truth I am involved in it financially, but a 59.95 we are not in it to get rich, it actually works and we could get $300 for it) that has a money back guarantee to release a specific phobia in 1 hour or your money back. freedomfromphobias.com Our goal is to help. the proceeds from this will go to making a children's cd with animation and a rhyming song. then kids won't have to grow up with a phobia and they can teach the rhyming song to each other. a man who was afraid to fly used this technique once and then was on the airplane laughing 3 days later. It uses NLP and Eft, both are not new techniques. If I am overstepping the spirit of this group, let me know.

To the nurses:
I do have to acknowledge that I agree with you; I fully admit my insanity for taking prescription drugs (and at high doses) given to me by my brother, not a doctor. I know this doesn't justify it, but I figure that it's better than running through the plane like a screaming lunatic in the midst of a panic attack. I must admit that I am also guilty of chasing a Xanax with alcohol in my quest to find a dose that works. But DO NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT, try that at home, kiddies! Just poor judgement on my part, plus I HATE going to doctors so I haven't bothered to get my own prescription. I don't like taking pills, so flying is the only thing I ever take Xanax for, and only when the radar indicates that it's going to be a really bad flight.
