Flying into LAX. What beach would work for us?

We will be coming into LAX about 9:30 am (getting a rental car) and I want to do two things before we head to Aneheim that afternoon (late).

Chinese Theater ( just want to see the stars outside and experience the area, not watch a show. )

A beach (which one?) I have 3 kids. We dont need a hot beach to lay on. We usually go to Oregon and those beaches are windy and cold and we love beachcombing and wave watching.

And I need to find one more "place" that would really give us the feeling of SOUTHERN CALI but not take us on a long drive.

I cant find any shows filming that day, it would have been fun to take the kids to be part of a studio audience, but looks like thats a no go.


I am not firm on any of these plans. But I dont really want to do a theme park, as we'll be in Disneyland for a full week.
I have two weeks to plan, and I'm not finding it easy to decide what to do with this one day!

I think I need to find a good map. I dont know where any of this stuff is

Hmm a beach near by. The Hollywood area is kind of inland for a quick drive to the beach. There is a lot of touristy stuff to do in Hollywood though. What does the family enjoy?

Hm. Are you planning on arriving, picking up a rental, hitting Hollywood, AND a beach, all before heading to Anaheim?

Late afternoon is a rough time to head into Anaheim, with traffic. Are you solid on doing Hollywood that day? If not, I'd suggest picking up your car, heading down south to an Orange County beach, and then into Anaheim

If you have the time, southern OC has the best beaches... cliffs, tidepools, waves, all of it

I would say Huntington Beach or Santa Monica would be good too. You are still looking at a little drive, not bad, but remember the traffic is horrible Santa Monica has a really good Mexican restaurant at the end of the pier that is relatively inexpensive and fun.
