So as a little girl I decided I didn't like fish/seafood (devastating to my family of recreational fishermen)

As I continue education into the "foodie" world, I decided it was time to put my 8 year old self's preconceived notions behind me (in my mid thirties.)

Recently, I have started to branch out and try new things so far I have tried crab cakes:confused: (blah), some other crab dish (better, but still just okay), seared ahi:love: (HEAVEN), sashimi grade raw ahi tuna (good), mahi mahi (not impressed, but could have been overpowered by a strong sauce, will try again.) I have tried all of these at high caliber restaurants near the sea (Hawaii and Florida).

I am excited to try flying fish and am interested in trying something new there, either an appetizer or main course. Looking for recommendations for something to try! I have red about the snapper, but am not sure if that is too "fishy" for me.

Would love to hear your rec's! TIA:worship:

I thought the snapper was a thing of beauty, as it is the signature item at Flying Fish. The sauce made it wonderful, IMHO.

I agree-the Snapper would be a perfect dish.
And it's clear you've never had a genuine Md. crabcake!!

Crab Cakes can really be hit or miss. I would suggest giving them a try again when you are at Flying Fish...they are fabulous.

I love the scallops with risotto.

With regards to your mahi mahi...yes a sauce can definately ruin the fish.

Seafood is wonderful if fresh and done right. Unfortunately, so many places do it wrong.

We could be twins, as a kid I would not touch seafood but in the last 10 years I have really branched out.

We ate at FF in Oct and I ordered the red snapper, never had it before but I thought what the heck. It was the most amazing piece of fish, light and flaky and melt in your mouth....I could not get enough of it and even DH, who doesnt eat fish fish (he likes shellfish) enjoyed it.

We are going back in June and I cannot wait to order this again! BTW, DH says the NY Strip from FF is one of the best that he ever had.

Have you tried salmon - like tuna its a meatier fish. I don't think its on the Flying Fish menu regularly (it might be, can't remember) - but its Artist's Points signature dish.

The snapper at FF is good, the leeks it sits on top of are better.

You hubby is right. My hubby gets the NY strip almost every time...we consider it the best steak on disney property.

I could have written your post. I've "hated" fish since I was a kid. I think it must have been the trout my dad and brother would catch and bring home for mom to fry, yuck! I can now finally eat fish, if it doesn't have a real "fishy" taste.

The first time we went to FF, I tried the potato wrapped snapper. And I've had it every time since. You won't be disappointed.

I also had "real sushi" for the first time this year at Zushi Puzzle on Lombard St. if anyone finds there way to Calif. My daughter said it's the best sushi in SF.

Since you like tuna you may want to stick with fish that have steak-like qualities. Swordfish and shark would probably suit you.
That said, the potato-wrapped snapper at Flying Fish really is quite good. Because it's a signature dish, I would order it. Look at it this way: you can check another one off your list if you don't like it!

Although the FF menu is subject to change, they usually have a seared tuna main course, served with carrots, pea pods and mushrooms in a Thai curry/coconut broth. It's really good.

I am eating at Artist's Point next month, maybe I will try it then!

Okay, I am definitely sold on the snapper!

Another vote for the scallops!!! Can't wait for may to come.:thumbsup2

These will be on my list for next time.

My dad brought home bass and Northern Pike...yuck!

I am excited to try swordfish, I have heard it would be up my alley!

Thank you all for your help! I am really looking forward to this meal!!!

Scott is right in a general sense--those steak-like fish would probably be best for a non-seafood lover.

I had the Mahi Mahi there last week and it was excellent. Very fresh and cooked prefectly. Came with rock shrimp in a lobster cream sauce. Excellent.

OMG! The salmon was the best salmon I've ever eaten! It just melted in your mouth, it was sooooo good!
