flying delta

You can do a paid upgrade for better seats if you check in online 24 hours before your flight, unless you have already purchased a premium fare such as first class.

Delta's frequent flyer miles do NOT expire and it is free to sign up. So sign everyone up who is flying with you. In addition, Delta miles can be used for hotel stays and car rentals when you book these online. This is very useful since you can use a combination of miles and cash!

If you get a Delta SkyMiles American Express card each person's FIRST bag flies free, no $25 charge. This card has no annual fee for the first year.

Delta's frequent flyer miles do NOT expire
I'm not sure that's accurate; you may need to have activity on your Delta Skymiles account at least once every three years.

It is accurate. Delta has done away with mileage expiration. I was a month away from 12,000 miles going bye-bye and they changed their policy to no expiration. Needless to say, I was beyond thrilled.

Agree that DL miles no longer expire. As noted by the PP, this is a recent change.

Val & I fly DL very frequently - well enough to reach the first tier of their elite program - so I keep a close eye on their program benefits.

Not true from first hand experience. I applied for the credit card and set up a new sky miles account not realizing the credit card already had one. So when I called to merge my accounts Delta asked me if I wanted to merge my third account. I asked what third account and the person told me I still had one opened with Northwestern before Northwestern & Delta merged and that was well over five years ago. I totally forgot that account and assumed it was lost when we stayed with US Bank and didn't go with Delta. VERY happy to realize not only did I get back my 35,000 miles but the 20,000 opening with Delta!

It's our first time flying with Delta. Anything special we should know?
Keep an eye on your reservations ... Delta is notorious for changing flight times and not notifying the passengers.

If you are within 90 days of your flight you can go in and choose your seats - but again, keep an eye on them - if there is an equipment change your seats may not be where you initially chose them, or even together. By keeping an eye on your reservation you can ensure you are seated together.

You can choose your seats at ANY point, even when making the original reservations 330 days out. But, as noted, please keep an eye on your reservation.

Definitely keep an eye on your seats. If they change planes on you, they typically don't move your seat assignments over. We have flown with Delta the past three trips, and have been very happy.
