We are scheduled to fly to Orlando in less than 2 weeks and DD (7) came down with a cold this weekend (with sore throat from all the post-nasal drip). I'm thinking the cold will have run it's course by the time we leave but, if not, I don't want the poor thing to have head congestion and then deal with the pressure from flying so I'll probably give her some decongestant before we take off.

Anyone have any other tips for dealing with flying with a cold?

TIA!

Debbie

There was another thread on here about Airborne. I am not sure if it will work in your case but I don't think it could hurt. I went and bought some today and I can't wait to try it!

I looked for it at Walmart and they didnt have any. I did see something homeo stuff for the flu and picked up some of that since they wont give us flu shots here (we're not high risk). I think youre supposed to take that and other products as soon as you notice the symptoms for it to do anything. Looks like now all you can do is over the counter meds. Check out earplanes which might help with any ear pressure (ear plugs that release the pressure).

I looked around for them too for a while and finally dragged the pharmacist out to look for them. They had them but I never would have found them! So, it does not hurt to ask!

Give her some Sudafed (or another decongestant) about 20 minutes before take off. Definitely helps!

Thanks for the replies!

I bought some Sudafed yesterday so we'll have it just in case!

ask the flight attendant for a cup of hot water (not too hot, but one with some steam) and hold it by their ears - the steam will cause the ear to pop. Just don't do it with turbulance!

My Daughter came down with a bad cold and sore throat from the drip the day before we left. I went to the doctors and was told to give her Robotusin DM and that worked perfect. Cold was gone in 2 days and sore throat gone next day.

If your child is pron to ear infections then you might want to visit the Dr. the day before you fly to be sure that her ears are clear.

For a child as old as 7 chances are it won't be a problem.

For kids under 4 years old I always make sure.

DD came down with an infection from flying once and we had a take a day to take her to Centra Care to see a Dr. (she was 2 years old at the time.) Since then we make it a point to have her ears checked before leaving. Dr. doesn't seem to think we are being paraonid or overly carelful, but maybe he is just nice.

In our house we love Zicam. We use it before flights just to be careful. Also Ocean nose spray is great to keep noses clear.
