1.what city do you live in?
2. What alternate airports are you considering?
3. Which airport are you flying into? There is more than 1 and LAX isn't the closest to DLR.
4. Do you have a spell check function on your keyboard?

if you can fly out of the USA you might be able to get a better deal. We flew out of Fargo on allegiant air and we got a package deal ( air, hotel, car) for 4 of us for a week, and it cost us about the same as just 4 airline tickets flying out of Canada would be.
if you are going to Disneyland and LEGOLAND, then you should get the Southern California citypass. you get 3 Disneyland parkhoppers, 1 day at seaworld and 1 day at LEGOLAND. If your a Costco member, you can purchase the citypass on Costco.ca.
another option is to check out flight centre for deals.
I think you'll want to look at flights out of Detroit, since its so close. John Wayne Airport is the one closest to DL- only about a 30 min. drive. But i think from Detroit you can only get connecting flights there,; no nonstops. As dsneygirl said, you'd have to look into renting a car or van for Legoland. LAX is waaaaay north of Anaheim, with quite a long drive compared to John Wayne- at least an hour, if the LA traffic is good.
If you are getting a hotel for Legoland, you might consider doing that at the end of the trip and flying home from San Diego.
I'd fly out of either Detroit or flint. It is easier to go through customs by car then at an airport. Also the kids under 16 will not need passports if crossing by land. LAX is huge, try John Wayne airport to land instead.
La traffic is crazy. It's like being in the middle of a video game. I hated that part. We stayed at the Hilton in Anneheim. It was across the street from a disney parking lot so we just caught the shuttle to the parks from there. Once in Anneheim we didn't need a car. We returned it right beside our hotel. We spent time in long beach first where we needed a car.
