Flushed bra causes sewer collapse

A bra and a pair of knickers have been blamed for a flood and road collapse in County Durham.

Northumbrian Water said the underwear was flushed down a toilet and caused a blockage in a sewage pipe in Middleton-St-George, near Darlington.

Heavy rain, together with a build up of grease and fat, caused the pipe to burst and the road above to collapse.

The road will remain closed for days and Northumbrian Water estimates repairs will cost more than £15,000.

The company has now urged residents to think carefully about what they flush away.

My daughter flushed a Little People person down our babysitter's toilet a few years ago. It got stuck on the tree roots which had infiltrated the sewer line, and caused a back up. We volunteered to pay half the cost to unclog the sewer.

We had someone at the hospital flush a pair of jeans
it broke the main sewer line and flooded a whole floor.....we are still trying to figure out how one goes about flushing jeans....

About 10 years ago, my DB, his wife and two sons were visiting my mother from out of state. One evening, my SIL went down to the basement to run some laundry and found water an inch deep on the floor. It was a huge mystery - nobody could figure out what had happened, but we started bailing and called a plumber. The next day, the plumber arrived and went to work, and after about half an hour presented my mother with the bill and a pair of soggy underwear belonging to DN, who was about 10 at the time. It seems DN had tried to pass some gas and had picked up a hitchhiker, so to speak. He didn't know what to do with his soiled underwear, so, naturally, he tried to flush them down the toilet. When my brother first confronted him, he tried to deny the underwear was his. When my brother asked him to produce his underwear from the previous day, he explained that he couldn't, because he had been "freeballin'." This is a story we're saving up to tell his fiancee at their rehearsal dinner.
